Avid Arch Rivals if you're wanting cable operated, or for the ultimate in low-maintenance HS 33s would mean not have to worry even about cables, but in my experience (from quite a few years ago so my memory could be a bit jaded) HS33s can be a bit grabby, sort of on or off with nothing in between.
Whatever you get, make sure you have good pads. Best I've found is Koolstop dual compund cartridge pads. One bit cleans the rim while the other bit grips hard. Use them on my hack with Deore brakes and they are the best investment I made for that bike. Don't compare to discs in modulation or the wet but at least they have some bite compared to the stock Shimano pads.
