I may be needing to replace the chainrings on my Race Face Prodigy crank soon. I noticed that as well as selling sets of Race Face Race Rings for 65 quid, Chain Reaction are also selling sets of Prodigy rings for 35 quid.
I've probably been spending too much money on my bike recently so I'm tempted by the Prodigy rings. Would it be a good budget way to revitalise my cranks or a false economy to get them?
On the other hand, it may just be my middle ring that needs replaced in which case there isn't much between the Prodigy and Race Set for individual rings.
Just bought Race Face race rings, won't go on my Bontrager crank, replaced middle ring first then other 2 still no joy rung silverfish and they didn't want to know, e-mailed race face and still waiting for a reply. Want some meausrements to see if it is my crank or their rings that are out. I am pretty sure it is their middle ring that has been machined wrong.
First off, it probably is just your middle ring that needs replacing. I've had the same granny/outer for AGES.
Race Face rings are notoriosly bad. I had two RF middles rings, both of which wore out disappointingly quickly. Middleburn, TA, and Blackspire are all well regarded if you want something that will last better.
I had a Middleburn hardcote and that lasted pretty well, currently running a Blackspire one because my LBS was out of Middleburn.
Oh, I'd gottent the impression that Race Face rings lasted well, at least compared to Shimano's. Also I got the idea that Race Face rings shifted better than anything except Shimano, so they sounded like a good choice.
A middle Race Face Race Ring costs £23 from Chain Reaction. What else is good at that sort of price?
As for Richard's comment, I'd hope that Race Face rings would fit my Race Face crank!
Blackspire super pro is £25 from Chain Reaction and shifts pretty well. I hear they last well, but I've only had it on for a couple of rides so I can't really comment from personal experience.
I have Blackspire Super-Pro. Shifting is OK (not as good as Shimano) and they seem to have lasted reasonably well - middle is starting to show some wear after about 1200km. This is not substantially better than the Deore rings I rode in the same local conditions on my other bike before I got this one.
I'd be happy to go with Blackspire again, although I may have been tempted to ty something else to get better shifting.
ta or blackspire do the job well. Prodigy rings certainly aren't that good, certainly no better than XT. My prodigy cranks have a TA Chinook middle ring that seems pretty good. No problems shifting. As someone else mentioned, you probably only need to replace the middle...
Andy, betd/goldtec don't do ramped chainrings...
Richard, are you sure you got the right chainrings for your cranks? if it's 5 bolt then you've got the choice of standard drive or compact drive...
No its 4 bolt, have been on to Silverfish and all they could say was its not our ring, no help whatsoever, trying to find what thickness the mounting lugs on the crank should be. However have spoken to a LBS who says that they fit race face OK, even tried with 3 raceface rings and the spacing is all wrong, pretty sure it is the ring, waiting for a friend who is going to take about 1mm (measured against existing ring) off on his lathe and make new lifting rivets for it, this should then put the ring in the correct position.
bought my bro a set for his birthday, and we had trouble fitting them to a V Drive Extreme cranks, to the point we had to file a small edge off the crank arms. I think manufacturers just would prefer their components to be used together, and make it a little tricky
