Any recommendations for roof rack mounted bike carriers? Do you prefer upright ones that clamp the downtube or upside down ones that hold the bars and saddle (does anyone still make these?) cheers
I find the upright roof mounted carriers are best. The problem with the upside-down ones is that is you have hydro disc brakes, air from the cylinder will work its way up to the caliper on long journeys.
I use Thule Tour 510's. If they're good enough for the pro's they're good enough for me.
I've got the Fappa Ego, which is a good one. Take a look at the web site of the Roof Box Company, its got a few good quality carriers on. They sent me the Ego and also the Gyrio (sp) which I think was better, but it did not fit the chuffing roof bars I had.
Previously, I used a couple of cheapy carriers that picked up on the crank arm. It made mounting any bike easy, even if it had a monocoque downtube. They didn't have a lock on 'em tho so we didn't leave them unattended.
Thule fork mounted version is excellent. An earlier thread contained a supplier who sold them with matching locks if you wanted to buy 2 and didn't want to faff with more than one key.
the only problem with th fork mounted ones is I heard that using one invalidates the warranty on some forks. Thanks for the tips, the Thule tour looks pretty pricey but nice and I'll check out osme of the other options.
