The X517/317 rims are medium to high level rims and are excellent. The X2xx series of rims tend to be cheaper, (possibly) weaker and generally feature on cheap bikes and OE wheels. If you have the choice it's better to spend an few quid for the 317's (technically now 717's).
This is one reason why Mavic have rationalised their naming system this year to describe intended rim use and relative quality, so that for example, X517 and X317 are now both XC717 with a disc designation added for the disc rim.
Mavic have changed their code numbers/names recently - if you look at their website [http://www.mavic.com/] it shows a load of new names - XM - Extreme Mountain (for Downhill?), Cross Mountain (freeride?), Cross Country...
Extreme MTB Rims: EX 721, EX 729 DISC, EX 823 DISC
X Mountain: X 221, XM 321 DISC, XM 719, XM 819,XM 819 DISC
XC Rims: XC 717, XC 717 DISC
Also I believe that the new numbering indicates the rim width etc.
Seems a bit confusing to me, the old F and X prefixes seemed much better. But I do love my new XC717 rim its fantastic! But to be fair it isn't that much different from the X517 I have as a front rim.
So basically I need to brave the cold in the garage this evening to put my X317 rims onto my new Stumpy FSR, because they are better than the X223 rims that are on there.
The X317s are fairly new so I can keep the OE rims as spares.
