I am looking into buying a trailer to carry my 18 month son this summer. If anyone has any recommendations to which one to buy that would be great. I am trying to keep the cost quite low if possible so if you know of any second hand trailers as well that would be great as well thanks
I used to work in a bike shop about 5 years ago and have always been a bit worried about child seats. They are a good idea and are perfectly safe but they just ain't for me.
I must admit, child seats can be sketchy! You have to be a lot more cautious when cornering because of the extra weight. Also i found that you sometimes you pop wheelies without meaning too. Trailers are a good idea but some kids prefer to be closer to the parent when travelling along on the bike, until they get a bit older and more used to it! Wait until he's older (hard work). I have 2 kids to pull along and with the combined weight of my bike,2 kids and a trailer,it's blinkin' hard work (especially when you encounter a hill) It's all worth it though, just to see their little faces light up!
I have a trailer which I have used for the past 3 yrs to good effect! My little girl is 5 now and she can still fit in comfortabley. Two notes of caution.......
1)Buy the lightest trailer you can afford if you are considering going UP any hills! I did`nt and have a steel framed trailer which certainly gives you a good work out!!!
2)If you are considering going DOWN hills think Maguras or Discs as Vee`s will be suicidal.
I personally think child seats are very dangerous as there is always a risk you could drop you bike with your child on it.
I have accidentally dropped my bike but due to the articulated universal joint on the trailer arm the trailer stayed well upright.
PS:- Milly always wears a helmet even in the trailer (Met Buddy)
