Ive just got my Chris King hubs, but I'm having second thoughts. Maybe i shoulda thought about the Mavics before. I dont mind selling the hubs and buying the Crossmaxs. Does anyone have them or any experience of them? They look nice, weigh about the same, probably less rotational weight. I can't see the hubs lasting as well as the chris king hubs but i reckon the build as a whole will be the same sorta strength. So anyone got some some feed back on Crossmax SL's?
The hubs aren't as durable as Chris King ones, but the bearings still last pretty well and are just sealed cartridge bearings when they do go.
The Crossmax will be stronger than a set of King hubs on X717 rims or whatever you were thinking of doing. Harder to maintain if you do damage them, in terms of replacement spokes (which must be bought in packs of 10, i believe for £25).
Being tubeless compatable they offer that as a performance advantage and

Being tubeless compatable they offer that as a performance advantage. You should also find that the rotating weight is less than the King/Mavic combo because of the cut outs in the rim.
The reality that the Crossmax are awesome wheels, very stiff, very fast, very light and very pretty, but the King wheels should be just as good, albeit slightly less eye catching, and with an incredibly annoying freehub noise!
Ayone want the back hub? Its brand new with Unfilled warranty and manual and Sticker! I emailed you rob but no reply :( I'm going to stick it on ebay in the next day or so
So how tough are these SL's? I've not taco'ed a wheel yet (or even anything a few turns on the spokes wouldn't fix) but they are super light weight wheels arn't they?
They are super light but all the components are designed to work together so they should be strong. When Mavic produce a rim (X717) they have to take into account the fact that it may be built with various different spoke types on various hubs by a complete muppit. This inevitably means that the rim has to be stronger than one that they build into a complete wheel.
I think that the wheel trashers will break anything that you give them, but if you like me aren't a trasher then they should be fine.
Mike have you stuck the wheels on yet and tried them out? I found a pretty cheap website to get em and after my check clears int bank I'll be first in line for a pair.
If you can afford to make a loss on the CK hubs you've already bought and buy SL's then I guess you'll be able to sort yourself out if anything goes wrong with them. For most people, the reputed durability of CK hubs and a top custom build would be of great concern when spending that kind of money. Many people used to complain about the old Crossmax not being very robust or durable, but haven't heard so many such stories since they went to the tubeless rim. In addition, my professional wheelbuilder friend lusts after a pair of SL's, so I don't think you'll go far wrong either way.
478 was the cheapest I could find which would only be a little more expensive than the Chris King Build I would make. Know anywhere cheaper that is in England and on internet or in Bristol? I though 478 wasnt bad considering alot of peeps want over 550 for the pair.
I'm not too worried about durability because I've read loads of reviews and they all seem quite positive, I dont mind replacing the odd bearing either. I used to have to service my rollerblades bearing every week and never had a problem.
I would prefer to buy some second hand ones off ebay, I don't mind a scratch here and there if it save me loads, but can't find any in england, and unlike little things these will never get through customs and cost a bomb to ship too. Anyone Selling a pair?
