My single speed is running a drive train of a DMR tension seeker, a DX BMX cog and a random 9 speed front chain ring. The SRAM PC48 chain is skipping and is now worn out.
What else is a chain to run? Obviously I can replace with any 7-8 or 9 speed chain, but I was just wondering what else might do. I was wondering if a 1/8 inch chain might work as it should be more durable, and certainly cheaper than a chain designed to shift well. The PC48 lasted 800 miles of winter riding so it was not a bad chain by any means.
Haven't tried it on a single speed but changed to 1/8th chain for the non-derailer chain on my MTB Tandem. Works well and effectively lasts forever! (providing you keep it lubed ;)
i tried a bmx chain on my SS, its well 'ardcore mate - the only problem i had with it was when using the poncy speed linky thing - didnt fit through my Rohloff chain tensioner too well, but when fixed with a normal pin works great!
1/8in chain might _look_ beefier, but it's probably not actually any stronger or more durable. If you think about what a multi-speed chain is designed to do, running it on a single-speed is hardly challenging it at all...
I run a BMX chain on mine (because it's gold) and never had a problem. I swear I can feel they're chunkier than a 7/8/9spd chain when pedalling. A BMX splitting-link might not fit through your tensioner.
I also need a half-link on mine due to very uninteresting chainstay length issues. Which used to be easier to get in 1/8in. That's easier as in "not actually impossible", of course ;-)
I decided to keep on running a PC48 as it did last for ages, and is easy to fit, and reasonably cheap. I wasn't sure if the 1/8 chain would work on a 9 speed front ring (the chain would be much wider than the actual chain ring). If I change to a thicker single speed specific I might try a BMX chain.
What sort of milage are you getting out a BMX chain out of interest? Of course it depends on how dirty the chain gets and how clean you keep it.
Mike, what ratio are you running, I had a similar kind of need-a-half-link scenario, but managed to get round it by being clever with chainring and sprocket sizing.
