Just received a new bike with Mono Minis fitted and I was warned that the brakes will be crap until they bed in. NO KIDDING!! I've been out about 7 times (Approx 2- 2.5Hrs each) as well as a dozen times down a hill at my place and to me they still don't feel any good. The Deore 555s I had on my old bike had far more stopping power than this!! Is this to be expected? Do these Brakes take ages to bed in or do you think there might be something wrong with them! PLEASE HELP...ME....
they take along time to bed in man. if they have the sintered pads they seem to take ages. i was in your boat a while ago wondering why i'd forked out for them but 30hrs riding later they are bang on. stick with it.
Cheers scoop.. I think they are sintered pads. So what you're saying is that I need to get out on my bike a wee bit more.... I'm sure I can manage that. :-) I'm just soo looking forward to feeling these babies. Always fancied a pair off Hopes.
30 hours! Bloody hell they should be well bedded in by now. Get them really hot (ride with them on) and then chuck a bucket of water on them that will do 70% of the bedding in, an hour of singletrack will do the rest.
I'm always pretty carefull trying not to contaminate my pads. At the start I got the pads out to give them a wee sand just incase. I tried the flying down a hill bit and cooling them with water, it helped a bit, but not to great satisfaction.
But I'm going out again tonight, so I'll try pouring water over them after I've done a longer downhill section. They should be pretty hot by then.
I suppose it's prevented me from flying over the handlebars in the past month! :-)
Mine bedded in after 1 very very wet muddy 20 mile ride! they are now 100% better than my old deore discs. Also helped a mate bed his sintered pads in (xt) the other night using the rub some dirt in, ride, cold water, ride, cold water, ride etc method, bedded them in in 20 minutes.
I did play around with the lever position aswell, as funny as this seems this made a hell of a diference! the levers were pulling into the bars too far and I was thinking shit my deore would have locked up by now! tweeked the lever out with the alan screw and all was well.
Mine took several rides too and had a little rubbing to start with but are now spot on. I also like the squealing noise they make as it warns those lovely pedestrians of your presence. They even look good - guess Hope have thought of everything.
cheers all.. I'll give it another couple of rides and if it's not better, I'll just give it to dealer to check out during it's first service. well, it's windy but I'm off out to ride..
theyre very nice, I just hope they dont become like minis(the car) where everyone has one and theyre so cool that they arent cool anymore. I wanted to be exclusive!! :)
to bed mine in, i braked hard from about 20 mph to 0 about 25 times for each brake and poured water on them every 5 times. it seem to have worked. i sometimes find that i need to do this a few times before a ride to get them biting well though.
from cold hope mono's(sintered pads) are crappy but so were my old deore. Basicly it's the same as on a racing car you've got to warm the brakes up before they work there best.
