Does anyone know if its safe to run 180mm rotors on Marz MX Pros or is 160mm - as on the Marz website - still the maximum to go for? Thinking of getting some discs to replace my Vs... Cheers, Andy.

Was running 205mmm M4 on my 04 mx pro. No problems, but now it's on my hardtail with a 185 avid mech, again no problems. I think that it's Marzocchi covering themselves. Saying that, the fork has only been used for xc jeyboy stuff, none of your big northstore/ downhill/ street looning.

only go by the maximum if you want to keep your warranty.
a z1 type only takes a 185mm rotor, z1 20mm axle 205mm, i've known many broken disc tabs on forks and cracked arches because of using wrong size rotors, even wheels slipping out of the dropout!

Cheers guys, will mainly be for xc stuff around the lakes and similar so maybe 160 is enough anyway - don't like the sound of forks self destructing! Would 160 front and 140 rear be the way to go then or 160 all-round?
|
 |
how much do you weigh ??
13stone+ go for 185/160, 17+ 205/185 thats what I run off, obvisious if you shoot down the hills at the lakes dragging your brakes you'll want more power.
185 should be fine, on all but the cheapest forks really.

I have a 185 mini on my MX comps ( i Asked the guy at h@1f0rd$ if this was ok on my forks and was told yes) so if they snap i will be back like a shot
|
 |
upto 185mm is safe to run
|
 |
Andy M, unless U get it in writing you won't get anything of Halfords.

Cheers guys, for the record the Marz website says 30mm stanchions = max 160mm rotor but sounds like people are running bigger discs anyway. Think I'll probably risk the 180/160 setup when I take the plunge, shouldn't need anything bigger for my skinny self. Merlin's kits look as good as any - probably go for Mini Monos and Hope hubs...

 |
Andy G, Shop around. Speccing a custom build bike I saved £150 by going to Dave Hinde. No grey bits, full warranties, and that included Mavic/Hope wheels and I got Mono M4s for the price of some peoples Minis.
|
 |
Merlin specced me a bike with 185mm rotors at front on MXC's which I assume would fall into the max 160mm rule you quote from Marz - so if I had had a problem with them could I go after Merlin?
|
 |
 Dave Hinde sucks dogs cocks
Don't you dare mention his name in this forum again
|
 |
So, if you've got a Randy Dog which needs sorting out, the Dave's you man :)
2004 Ruckus I-drive 2.0, is specced with 203mm Juicy 7's, with Fox Vannila's, so make sense of that.
Paul, yes Merlin Specced and Sold you them, unless they warned you it'd void the warranty then no prob's ( ofcourse you might have to prove that they didn't warn U, which is impossible )

most fork manufactures seem to have forgoten that 180/185 disks exist. This seems very strange to me. On the subject of warranty GT spec my bivid 185 mech disk on RS piolts so if i break the forks then i will go after GT.

 andy,
i asked a similar question of the 2004 mx comps. here's the reply i got:-
-----Original Message----- From: techinfo@marzocchi.it [mailto:techinfo@marzocchi.it] Sent: 13 January 2004 10:16 To: Subject: Marzocchi SPA - Questionario customer-care
Dear Customer in reply to your technical question: I have fitted a 203mm avid mechanical disc to my recently purchased mx comps on a 1998 marin riftzone. I have heard rumours that a 203mm avid disc should not be used on these forks with a conventional quick release ?
http://riftzone.myphotos.cc/rz2.jpg
Is this true ? What will happen if I use this setup ? Will I risk damaging the forks or personal injury ?
Cheers. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- the reply is: -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dear Marzocchi customer,
For an XC type fork I would recomend the use of a 185mm rotor, however the 200mm rotor should be fine. I would recomend however that if you must use the 200mm rotor that you check your QR lever before every ride and use a steel shimano type lever.
Regards -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Attachment: -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Thank you very much for your help. Feel free to reply to this email to contact the nearest distributor in your area. Best regards, Marzocchi staff

Cheers all, you've been a great help. I'm off to the States and Canada soon so I may try and pick up some Juicys if I can get them for a good price. I think I'll get wheels (and disc brakes too if not while abroad) from Merlin, too much bad sh!t about Hinde's. Will definetly go for 180f/160r, Monos Minis if not Avids. I popped into Merlin today and they said 180mm should be fine - surprised that Marz website states a 160mm limit but it is just an ar$e covering exercise. RZ, interesting that Marz gave you a different answer!!! Link to Marz website

On a similar note, is it necessary to face the forks and frame for fitting the calipers? The guys in Merlin didn't think it might be but I'd rather be sure... Ta, A.
