Hello,
I have just purchased a new bike with Magura Julie Discs. I dont know if it is me but they seem to be rubbish. There is no power in the front and the back just squeals and vibrates so badly it ruins the overall bike.Has anyone else had any probs with these brakes or knows of any solutions?

Ignoring Mr Stone's interesting but by no means relevant interjection, I have Julies and I have no problems such as the ones you describe.

Mine work fine in the UK, worked well in the alps and only suffer from squeeling on the front when they get gritty.

I dont know enough to help you but bleeding them and facing the mounts seem to be two often suggested solutions. If its a new bike return to shop and complain.

If its a Merlin (they often fit Julies) return by post or bite the bullet and pay your LBS to look at it.

Thanks Paul, Hmm interesting from Mr Stone, but the LBS dont know much about julies, they deal in every other brand, so it looks like new pads and and a darn good clean of the rotors..... I liked the forum on Hopes though...

Steve, recommend that you get the disc mounts faced on the forks and remove paint from the bolt faces. Also check the set up of the calliper, they might not be aligned correctly, the shops tend not to take too much care when setting them up. Also make sure the pads are not contaminated with oil and you that you take the trouble to bed the pads in, usually by few hard stops from high speed, i.e., 30 stops from 20mph. If all fails ring Tony Barton at Magura UK Service Centre 01530 837195, he will help. You might find this site useful for Magura advice, http://www.execulink.com/~dtierney/wmc/Magura/. These brakes should work very well, you clearly have a problem.

Andy,
Thanks for the advice. The bike has just come back from the shop, new pads, caliper checked, mounts checked etc so I hope that this will sort the problem out. Thanks Guys.
i would take the advice of andy and have a look at the magura website.

you have to set em up as the manufacturer reccomends as opposed to just slapping em on like i did initialy.
ive got the 2002 models and they are more than adequate for me, but it took a while for me to get them right becuase i wasnt doing what i should have been according to magura.
setting the pads up is a good example adjust the inside ones first and then the outers. silly stuff like that makes a difference.
making sure the pads are bedded in well is another one. cos i live in essex i never bedded them in well enough (due to not having any hills) but when i went back up to scotland i had them sorted in no time and they worked ten times better.
as for the squeeling i put a little dab of copper grease BEHIND the pads to stop em vibrating as much

hope some of this waffle helps
