im just about to but a new cassette and rear mech for an 8 speed.

ive gone for a deore rear mech but im not to sure about the ratios for the cassette. im running 2 up front with a bash guard.

heres the options;

If you've only got 2 up front you want the highest gearing possible, so 12-something would be the one to go for. I'm surprised the bottom gear isn't lower though, to be honest. 12-25?

You seem to be looking in the "wanky hybrid cassette" part of the catalogue. You want an 11-28.

I'd say go for a STX Cassette from CRC -8 Speed 11-30 - that's what I'm running with an LX mech/groupset.

gear cables !

stick with the good old bog standard types or splash out on some nice prelubed ones ?

The black teflon coated ones are quite good (eg Clarks) or some stainless steel ones. I go with the theory that you might as well buy cheapish ones and replace them more frequently than splashing out and getting fully sealed ones.

due to my cable routing the cassing is one whole length with no breaks so i suppose i should just stick yo the old faithfuls.
