does anyone else out there have any probs with there rocket triggers? iv had mine on for about 400 miles, most of the summer. they have got progressvly worse until now indexing is out of the window, shift up 2 down 1 up 1 down 1 then maybe......no! feels really slack like its just worn out. or do i just have friday afternoon product problem?
Um...maybe not a problem specific to your shifters mate. A few things to check before you start pointing the finger at them:
Cables: Are they clean? If not put the chain onto the largest (32ish tooth) sprocket and then shift the deraileur all the way down by working the shifter. This should give you enough slack on the cables to pull the outer cables out of the cable guides, wipe them down with a rag and then spray them with a light lube of your choice. I find GT85 works well.
Rear Mech: Is it blocked up with gunk and muck? Clean it all off (not with a hose or pressure washer!) and then re-lube the pivot points with a light lube of your choice and then wipe off the excess.
Chain and sprockets: Are they clean? Or are they jammed with loads of grunge and crappiness? If they are then use a nice bio-degradeable de-greaser to clean off both the chain and sprokets, it's also well worth getting one of those chain cleaners with the bristles on wheels and running the chain through that. Also make sure that there isn't any gunge between the sprockets themselves. If you really are in trouble with the chain and sprockets then you can clean it all off with gunk, but be careful cos gunk is a very powerful very nasty non-biodegradeable product which will happily kill all the plants in your garden if you're not careful with it.
Cable Tension: Is the cable set to the correct tension? (TBH this sounds like the most likely cause of your problems) Assuming the bike is well cleaned and oiled shift the chain onto the highest (smallest sized) sprocket and set the shifter to the corresponding position. Loosen off the cable retaining bolt on the rear mech and pull it tight, you don't have to pull it UBER tight, but it does need to be tight, so maybe try using a pair of pliers to get a good grip. If the shifting is still a little out, adjust the barrel adjuster until you get perfect shifting. If it still doens't work...odds are something is broken.
NB: All descriptions assume that you're using traditional and not rapid rise rear mech, if you are using an RR rear mech then reverse what I've said about set up in relation to cable tension
Mine did that. Cleaned the last section of cable (right by the rear mech) and now they work fine. I was really surprised how much of a problem it caused.
Best investment I ever made (bike maintenance wise) was to buy a pair of 'Park Tool' cable cutters.
Now I just buy outer cable by the metre from my LBS shop and replace my outers whenever the shifting gets a bit 'heavy'.
I can get away with re-using the inner wire a couple of times and just replacing the end caps, nipple etc.
I probably replace the rear mech outer about three or four times a year. Takes about ten minutes. I've had perfect shifting for ages now.
I hate to think how many perfectly good rear mechs I have binned 'cos I thought they were "worn out" when all that was wrong was that the cable was full of crap.
I would steer clear of the 'cable kits' you can buy. The lengths of outer never seem right and I always seemed to end up buying two!
