I have run an SRAM X.9 mech fitted late Aug 2005 and completely worn out the top jockey wheel bearing in under 700km and 3 months. At £12.00 a set this is quite an overhead. Are sealed bearings available? Yes, I do wash and lube after each Xcountry ride.

Join the X9 wobbly jockey owners club. Great mech, nasty Pulley wheels and no I haven't found an alternative.

I forgot to say that they work better knackered; they don't jam anymore.

would the X.0 bearings fit in there? or is it a slightly different design?

i got a spare XT rear mech - brand new, not used, it is one of those funny reverse pull ones tho (which i actually like) if you like :p

Pull yours to bits and post a pic Smidge. There are two holes like a button on X9 pulleys rather than one central hole.

It has to be said XT pulleys are fantastic but Shimano's 2:1 ratio means the indexing isn't as crisp. You can't have everything.

John - got to go out on the piss now, but will take some piccies in the morning.

I know that X0 is a complete sealed cartridge bearing and the X9 uses bearings and bushes.

Will pull iit apart tomorrow morning tho mate and see what i can find.

I was only half serious about pulling a brand new mech to bits Smidge, I don't want you to strip a thread or anything. Just tell us if the fixing bolt is central to the pulley or not. If it isn't I'll ask the guy in Sport 2000 to take one out of the safe to have a look at.

yes, the X9 jockey's do need maintenance but I've found quality of bearing/bush to be better than Shimano and will come up like new if taken apart and cleaned

For the bushing jockey, use wet&dry paper on the metal 'middle' to rub off grit and tarnishing. clean everything else and apply thin stream of lube around inside lip of the flat outside caps to help keep further crud at bay. leave the metal bushing clean of lube or it will attract dirt. the wet/dry paper claening leaves a surface that will roll freely inside the plactic outer

For the bearing jockey, dissasemble and remove both the round seals either side of the bearing itself with a thin sharp pointy blade, and in this way you can clean all debris inside with solvent. The crud will actually was through and should leave shiny-ish metal bearings. Dry, pack with grease and refit seals. they will go back easily so long as you haven't bent them taking off. clean everything else and reassemble.

it's basic maintenence so apologies for this being obvious to anyone, but worth all SRAM owners knowing it's worth effort to take apart. IMO the inside are a tad better than Shimano, no less vulnerable to crud but will be durable enough for a few strip downs

John - dont worry bout me taking it apart - i always like to take my components apart to work out how to maintain them anyway.

I got a good bike mechanic background so should be ok :P

However i am nursing a severe hangover so will have to take it apart this evening if i'm recovered lol!

That's not worn Bernard, it's nicely run in. ;-) Upper pulley I presume.

Mr Tee. Your keep the pulleys turning routine is much the same as mine. XT upper pulleys have little rubber lip seals and I think they really help.

Good on you Smidge. I bet the XO upper pulley costs more than I can get a mech for though.

Still nobody with aftermarket pulleys?

£17 on CRC for spare X.0 jockey wheels.

However (although i havent used my X.0 mech yet :p) the bearings look pretty robust and maintainable - no bushing to wear away in there.

Oh will have pics of my exploded X.0 rear mech up soon. However i fear i will have a load of people slagging me off again for taking photos of a rear mech lol :p

#back in from CRC#

They've got all of 'em now! Good oh. X9 has two holes and XO one hole but Tacx ones look worth trying.

yer whats with the 2 holes?

lol i will investigate :p been looking at some X.0 and X.9 technical drawings, however my lack of brain power really does hinder me :-)
