I am wondering if anyone can recommend a front mech for a 2004 Specialized Enduro. I bought a Deore XT M760, but the chain catches the lowest part of the shifting plate, and lowering the deraileur means it wont shift to top gear. I think the top swing model is the only one that will fit the bike, no room for a bottom swing or e-type. Has anyone else had a similar problem, and can anyone recommend a mech that will fit, would a M750 for instance?

All help is greatly appreciated!

The newer style M760 mechs tend not to shift nearly as well as the older ones IMO, just not as smooth. You need a 34.9 down pull, top swing mech, although most are now multifit. See if you can source an older style M752.

Hi Nick,

I think we are both of the same opion, I was thinking of geting the older M750 or M752, the other problem with the M760 is that hving both bottom and top swing makes it very hard to access once installed.

Will try to get an M75* and see what happens, it does seem to be a problem on other bikes that the chain rides on the horizontal lower parts of the shifter.

My 2004 enduro was running a deore without problem as far as I can recall and seemed to fit alright. That's what the bike came with anyway. I think the deore one is pretty universl and seems to fit most things.

Just stumbled on this and am equally at sea with the same problem.

Have an early 05 S-Works Enduro and have just bought an M760 top swing dual pull f mech for it, and am having exactly the same issue, when in the granny, no matter what you do, it rubs on the rear plate of the mech guide, and you can't lower it enough to stop the rubbing as it then fouls the front of the swingarm..

What di you guys buy in the end.

 Thanks

The chain does rub the cage in all but the top 3 sprockets when not under sag in the granny ring on these models.

M760 mechs should work if set up correctly.

Very strange, as it didn't at all on my 04 Enduro pro.

Not in any gear, ever. And the frames are the same geometrically speaking.

I've just added my product review of an XT mech used on my 04 Enduro...  Suffice it is to say I was much less than impressed.

I had reasonable results with the old LX one which came with the bike until the cage sheared.   It was lighter and more durable than it's XT replacement.

I've just bought an Enduro 2004 S-Works.
I've got the same problem now.
Can someone recommend a new front mech?

The LX FD-570 defintely works and the same XT/XTR equivalant, as Nick says  You need a 34.9 down pull, top swing mech

Pretty good thread though.

i was using an lx mech with my 2004 enduro then i swapped iot to the 2006 s-works and it was ok-ish. When i fitted the 07 xt front mech it went downhill from there. The back of the plate fouled on the pivot allen key bolt. Then the chain dragged when slack in granny but with time and practice it started working ok-ish again except it was very tight to pull compared with my deore on the armadillo hardtail.

Problem i have is anything over 2.25 tyres and the back of the mech rubs the sidewall.

Anyway to top it all ..the mech boke yesterday..i have probably only done 10 months on it so I am up for suggestions too..
