Hi i have realised that the reason i am not cycling at the moment is that its winter. therefore cold! What sort of jacket do i need to ride in the cold? i have waterproof jacket that folds small so would like something to wear under it if it rains, or on its own if it doesnt! Should i be looking at something from millets like: http://www.millets.co.uk/Millets.storefront/EN/Product/04120372
or something like the old Altura Altitude available from Merlin (£20)- though they only have a size too big for me.(XL) Would the extra size matter? or could /should i wear a normal fleece?!
As for gloves, i have some thinsulate windproof (i think) jobs anyway, surely they will be suitable?! all tow paths/town riding at this juncture i may add! Any advice appreciated!! thanks
Jacket looks good but IME waterproofs don't breath well enough for cycling, I have a windproof shell that cost £50 from an outdoor shop - look for something like pertex material - which is showerproof - as long as you look after it, and keeps the wind out, you can wear a fleece under it. Personaly I get too hot in a fleece unless it's really cold and normaly just wear a long sleave base layer and the shell. I've got a micro fleece put on for stops or it it gets propper chilly.
If you live anywhere near a decathalon store they do great cheap in the running and hiking sections - the biking stuff is a bit Euro Chic ;)
Thanks. had a really quick look(millets) and saw this: http://www.millets.co.uk/Millets.storefront/EN/Product/050476421
is this the sort of thing or do i need to get away from the fleece angle?! or this: http://www.millets.co.uk/Millets.storefront/EN/Product/041032422 looks a little chunky though! To be honest i dont wanna spend too much, first winter cycling again and all that!
that's danm cheap for a down jacket, I think what you wear depends on how hard you're riding, if you are just bumbling along riding gently then wear the same sort of kit as you would for walking, but if you are riding hard then you will get hot and need far less insulation, only you know how hard you are riding or how much you feel the cold, or for that matter how much of a sweaty fecker you are, me, I ride hard, don't particually feel the cold and sweat like a blind lesbian in a fish shop.
... sweat like a blind lesbian in a fish shop. I like it never heard that before!! normally keep warm enough walking around town in an Marks & Spencer Fleece. Maybe then that Altura Altitude "produced from fleece backed hi-dry fabric" should suffice then. an old model for £20 sounds like a baragin to me.
