any opinions on the sram PG990 and the xtr cassettes? i use shimano chains and cranks so should i stick with shim? the xtr is £40 more. as they are respectively the top components from each company is there much difference in spec/performance? i know the xtr is ti. thanks
Yeah It`s just the 2 biggest rings If I remember correctly , the spider is alloy as well . If you take a look at lower priced components and the weight difference you might just find that XTR and 990 come off the menu and you just might be tempted by XT and 950 and such like . Performance wise I`ve talked with loads of my mates and they all rate their cassettes - From Humble cassettes to high end stuff , seems it`s just down to weight at the end of the day <----- flees the room as "Naysayers" come in with "my cassette is so much better" justification speeches ;¬)
On a 9 speed XTR cassette, it's the top 4 sprockets that are titanium. The PG990 is more comparable to the XT cassette, although it is both more expensive and heavier. I'd stick with XTR, or if you want to save some cash go for XT, think it's a 40g penalty.
Dont forget, £89 for a cassette is a lot to throw away when it wears out which it will do eventually. The XTR may have a few Ti sprockets but the others will wear out just as quick as an XT cassette.I use Ultegra on my MTB, they're slightly cheaper than XT and you can change the majority of sprockets to suit your needs.
