I run USTs for a larger part of the year however every now and then I find myself belting into a corner way to fast, hit the brakes and try and slide around the bend only to find the front wheel clipping something hard and because of the wheel angle the tyre burps out the air and sometimes the latex and trying to reseal and reflate using a bog standard small Topeak hand pump is a complete and utter waste of time.
Does any one know of a decent hi volume portable pump that does not weigh a ton or needs its own camel back due to its size.
I am not fussed how much its costs, more interested in how good it is and how compact it is ???
If you use a camelbak, then you've room for something upto 12" long imo. I've tried tons of mini pumps, i'm currently using a Crank Bros minipump which has high volume/high pressure settings. Its ok but Its still bloody hard work though so I usually take my Topeak Road Morph with me, its the best but its about 12" long but not too heavy and it fits nicely into my camelbak.
CO2 makes sense. But I am a scrooge and will use a tube the day that my UST lets me down. If need be I've got a Topeak Mountain Morph which stows in the Camelbak and does the job nicely. I've also read about the "Cyclair" which is supposed to be very high volume but was put off on the basis that UST will occasionally be a sod to get started with a pump and the high volume of the Cyclair means you have to let it cool down if you've used it for more than 2 minutes.... Very small and not very heavy either but not as light as a mini pump. Oh and it's British too.
I've got a cyclair and it's w4nk! Just doesn't do what it says on the tin, takes ages to pump a tyre up, biggest waste of £20 in a long while :-( Road morph is good though. Would also reccommend co2 to seat the bead, then finish off with a pump, will make a cannister last a lot longer that way, so won't have to buy as many.
Just re read the first post form PB. Do you use genuine UST tires or a Stans, Bonty variant? I certainly find it really difficult to unseat the bead of my UST tires from the rim and a tire has never lost air in the way you described. What tire pressure do run? Maybe it's actually too low.
rims are bonty mustangs, tyres are all puka ust versions, they range from Tioga Red Phoenix to Conti Explorer Pro and some Spesh ones whose name I cannot remember.
The Red Phoenix are most prone to it, tyre pressure is tyically around the 30 psi mark.
ps I some tubes of araldite that I have no particular use for, maybe glue the bastards on eh :)
I don't know it sounds to me like the rims are where the problem is. I don't know much about the Bonty system or how it differs to Mavic's but maybe worth changing rims when you next have to.
