..anyone else experienced this problem with Mavic CrossMax wheels?
I've only had em a couple of weeks and can't have put much more than 100 miles on them but now when freewheeling the cassette sometimes grabs that chain making it lose. If I back pedal the hub makes a loud and unpleasant purring/dragging sound.
Can't be good and I'm especially pi$$ed off as I would expect a £400 set of hoops to be damn near perfect.
Bought them from Merlin, so it'll be an arse to return them.
I should have known better than to buy French..!

i just checked over my SLs, they freewheel fine and back pedal fine, my drive train makes a nice mechanical noise when pedalling or back pedalling. You can hear the ratchet clicking away when freewheeling and back pedalling too, but i don't see, hear or feel anything that could be construed as drag.

I felt something not too disimilar to worn bearings, i took the wheel off and checked everything over, but i cant see anything on the cranks, bb, mech or wheel that would suggest something is wrong, i think its actually just my chain engaging the chain rings lol.

I have heard crossmax freehubs can be a bit tempromental. You need to take the cassette off and service the freehub body (clean and oil) and see if that makes a difference. However, the 'purring' noise when you back pedal sounds to me like the pawls moving over rather than engaging(which is normal for back pedalling and freewheeling is it not?)

I havent had a problem with a single pair of Mavic wheels that I have used.

It is really easy to service them though.

just pull the spacer off the left hand side (disc side)
then using a large allen key, 8 or 10mm I think and a 5mm on the cassette side just unscrew the freehub body, check the pawls and the condition of the inside of the freehub body, then grease and re-fit.

Its pretty easy, to do and you will know instantly what the problem is.

if not take them to a local bike shop and let them sort them out.
It pays to buy local in my opinion.

There's a handy guide to servicing the Crossmax freehub on the Mavic website here

..I took the freehub apart last night (which is nice and easy!) and found that one of the pawls was stuck. There were a couple of very small metal shavings stuck down the side of it. I don't know if these are bits of manufacturing 'swarf' or have been created by the pawl not fitting properly in its home. Still, I've removed the offending bits, lubed up and it seems to be running sweet.
Even managed to set a new best average time on the way to work this morning!

I used yo have exactly the same problem wuth my Crossmax XL wheelset. In my case it was dirt getting in there. The bearings are not the best sealed either I was told. I was going to have them sent away to Mavic in the end to get them looked at but before I could the bike they were attached to got nicked.

Check out mtbr forum mavic free hubs can be a real pain. I have a pair of XL's which needed the LBS to replace the hub bearings. When they gave the wheel back the off set was so bad it looked as the frame was broken. I have had loads of rear wheel problems including needing a new rim following a bad line choice. I am now buying Hope pro 3 SP-AM4 on STANS Flow rims. Look a 28mm wide rim (a few grams heavier) is like a low profile wheel. This will make the tyre "lower" therefore alter the gearing (inc the revs) which will help you climb, lower profile means greater grip & ability to run larger tyres (and tubeless) at lower pressure. On 4 bolt disc set up with greater heat dissapation (therefore no drag) Mavics rubbish discs - BIG TIME! So more grip can run any tyre tubeless on legendary HOPE HUBS on a low profile strong light rim with proper straight pull 32 spokes (smaller spokes less wind drag) ENJOY
