He oould also wheelie it down the road ;-D The lock at each end is a fairly normal practice - i do it for commuting. But what if you are on a big day ride? I'll be b***ered if i'm going to carry round a few pounds of steel- water is bad enough!
if i can make it light/ integrated/inaccessable then i thats a start.
I've been to a few bike places where I've been horrified at the value of the bikes "lying around" with the owners not in view. I won't mention the locations but some of them are in some dodgy areas.
I went to Llandegla last week and was quite shocked by the number of high value bikes left alone outside. I was stuck between thinking its a nice thing and a little foolish?
yep. Somehow being at a race or enduro can give people the idea that everyone around is like minded bikie. Uh uh uh!There is a high chance some light fingered person is waiting to do a trolley dash with your beloved steed ;-)
A lock is really a deterrent to stop people walking off with your bike QUICKLY. It ain't ever going to stop them.
if you want security on the move, get a cheapish padlock and plastic coated wire 'chain'. its enough to stop someone walking off with it, and may make the opportunist think elsewhere.
i don't bother with super heavy duty locks - i just keep my bike under the stairs behind deadlocked doors and a security system. if thye get past that lot then the house insurance will take care of it. out and about i keep a little combination lock origionally designed for snowboards with a 'wire on a reel' type arangement - i then either lash mine and my mates bikes together or lash it to a bench or tree or something. always go through the back wheel what with it being a rohloff. usually sit with the bikes or where we can see emthough - it's just for when we pop into the cafe / pub to deter casual thieves. i also have a heavier 2 meter cable / key lock which i use to lock the bikes to the car rack - it just about goes through the roof bars and round 3 bikes on the carrier. useful for the pre ride shopping trip to a nearby bikeshop / cakery.... cheers
My brother has just had his commuter bike nicked. It was chained to the fence with two budget locks. He came back to find both locks had been bolt cropped. Bastards.
My point is that a set of Irwin 42" records (pikey 5* croppers) will cut nearly ANY motorcycle chain on the market so bike locks will disappear in an instant. Check out the ALMAX website and the wall of shame. If your spending out on a nice bike and/or want bomb proof security then an ALMAX chain and ground anchor are the only deterant. Too many nice bikes go walkies because they have a cheap padlock/chain combo.
