I have a 26.8 Easton carbon post and a new bike with a 27.2 seat tube. I do have a Thomson that fits the new bike but am wanting to try my old pin in there as it has more layback to see if it makes me more comfortable.
I think I'm right in coming to the conclusion that nobody makes 0.4mm shims so having looked at other threads on here, would a coke can or similar work for such a small gap and not do damage to the carbon post?
I'm trying different bike set-ups but as cheaply as possible, because sometimes on long rides my lower back starts to ache.
USE does a .4mm shim, but not with a 26.8mm ID. Just try it with the seat right back on the Thomson for a bit. If it's better that way, go get a layback post that fits.
Nick, Easton lists a 26.8x350mm EC70 so you've clearly only been around for ten minutes ;-)
It is right back at the minute, that's the problem so I don't really have any other room for manoeuvre there.
Like I said I'm just trying things out and although Orange spec non layback Thomsons, other places I read suggest with your elbow on the end of your saddle, your index finger should reach the middle of your steerer. I'm not taking this as gospel, just trying to experiment around a theme.
And yeah my Easton is a CT2 from about 2001/2 so have been doing 26.8s for a while.
No offence but I wouldn't be keen to buy a 2nd hand carbon post and the only reason I had carbon was because it was on a race hard tail to take the edge off the trail and keep things light.
Cheers on the coke can, its not really even meant as a permanent fix just long enough to see if it makes a difference.
I can recommend the Ritchey WCS Carbon if you want a light one with layback, probably not quite as much as the Easton though. Otherwise, try the Coke can.
If I was to get a new post, it would probably be another Thomson but the layback version as I'm more than happy with my current one but thanks for the suggestion.
Sorry, think I've confused you, the Easton will stay on my Orange E8 which is mainly set up for road riding now. The layback Thomson would go on my Orange 5 which is what I'm experimenting on and has the 27.2 seat tube.
