Want to see how a Rohlof hub works?

Chek here.

Quite cool. Although as each piece is added, you wonder if it's the last, and how (if you've just bought one to put on a bike) you're ever going to get it up a hill...

It looks heavy!

Cool.

I was only looking at the Thorn Raven Enduro yesterday, its starting to make a lot of sense to me. The Thorn frame seems well made but just not sexy enough to tempt me.

Saw an ad for the Enduro in WMB. £2k. £2-feckin-k!! What's that about?

I'm aiming to build a custom Ti frame, Rohloff wheel and everything else for under £1500, and I don't get OEM discounts on bits!

But the Enduro does look quite nice...

Buliding a frame in this country costs I guess

hmm i don;t think 2k is too bad for an enduro when you consider that it's not just a bag of parts you are buying - thye have expenses (labour, tax, premesis, phones, electricity, etc..) and profit to take into account - along with a 100 day no quibble trial period.
if you can put together a ti framed rohloff equipped bike for £1500 using brand new parts then good for you but paying off the shelf prices for everything i make my enduro out to be
forks £450
frame £600
rohloff £750
brakes £200
wheels/ front hub £150
bits n bobs £100
which is aprox £2350 (i've rounded up and down and guestamated some stuff there)- more than what i actually paid for the bike brand new. so yes they may get some hefty discounts as an oem supplier but they can;t be making much profit really.

I am on the case - building ti hard tail with rohloff.
GT xizang rohloff rear Mavic UST 819 - moots seatpost existing bits and maybe swop the SID fork it came with for my PACE gold stantioned (old now) RC36III pro EVO forks. Only serviced 2 years ago but a great fork.
Turning my Klein into a singlespeed. but cost of ti rohloff bike will be around £1200 and weigh 24lbs or slightly less

I think the internal gear system is the future of mtbing but it's still in its infancy. A friend of mine has one on his Cannondale Gemini and before that on a Super V. I find the drive a bit vague as in it doesn't feel like your pedalling force directly equates to how fast the wheels are turning. But they are super reliable (my friend cleans his bike about once a year) and not prone to damage.

I agree Daftpunk, about the future and the infancy. I love the idea but think they're too heavy and too expensive. That may sound contradictory but the market doesn't, in my opinion, need a Speedhub that lasts as long as these do. Most people just don't expect/need/want a drive train to last forever.

I hope the future doesn't involve the big S picking up the baton and taking away Rohloff's business but you can be sure they're thinking about it.

" Building a frame in this country costs I guess "

I think they are built in the far east .

mmmm, you got me thinking there timmy.. i wonder what shimano are up too? with honda and suntour developing gearboxes they must have something up there sleeve...

I've often thought that some kind of internal gearbox would be a great solution to my MTB woes (which consist basically, of wearing out stuff in the wet/winter and shitty weatherproofing) but then a mate bought a Rohloff and I had a little go on it.

I thought it felt very weird. The gear shifts were odd and the weight distribution on the bike was strange.

I've tried a 1 x 8 gear set-up and SS for winter friendliness and TBH, riding SS is the best solution. I find I run out of traction before I run out of steam when it's wet so have little to lose against gears.
