Does anyone have any experience or opinion of the new adjustable seat posts that are starting to appear?
I have been looking at http://www.gravitydropper.com/ and it looks like a really good idea, although it is quite a bit of weight to be adding higher up on the bike - how does this effect the centre of gravity and overall feel of the bike? Are there any other recommended makes / models out there?
AFAIK the only decent adjustable posts are the Titec one designed to be manually adjusted with a QR for big suss bikes where the design stops you dropping a conventional post too far and the Maverick Speedball, which is gas charged like an office chair and costs about £160.00.
If you can just fit a QR seatpost collar and your frame allows it then dropping the post takes seconds and this is the easiest way. You only need to drop it for V steep stuff so it's out of the way. Anything where you're required to do any pedalling and dropping the post makes no sense. I can only think of 3 sections of trails I ride regularly where dropping the post is an advantage.
I have many post postions that I use, fully up for the most efficent pedaling, a bit down for more technical stuff that still invloles pedaling, about half way in for longer DHills when I might want to rest me legs from standing up, and all the way to the frame from playing on jumps, drops and short DHs or really rocky stuff, I find with the seat out of the way I can chuck the bike around more and I feel more balanced - am I odd?
