Dylan - you may have had a bad time with the Post Moderne, but from what I can make out from what you have said on other threads, you are a 'chunky' chap, so you may not have had the correct elastomers in?
I am about 14st and made sure I had the heaviest-rated ones in and for all but the big whacks, it seems fine. As I said, you'd be out of the saddle for the bigger stuff anyway, all it helps then is that it's easier to grab the saddle between your thighs.
I rode a steel rigid for years with no sus-post and my backside definitely notices the extra comfort of one when riding an ali bike.
Also, despite my 14st, I've had the post since late last summer, I ride nearly every weekend and I have not had to adjust it yet, no play at all.
Maybe you had a bad'un, maybe I have a good'un. I would not write them off as just 'crap' though, maybe they just got better since you used one?
I've just asked Barbara what she thought of the Post Moderne she had on the back of the MTB tandem for a while. She didn't use the word 'crap' but 'irritating' and 'unnecessary'.
I like it a lot works very well, had it about 18 months have'nt needed to replace them elastomers yet, blue ones in at the minute. Though I'd probably prefer it a bit stiffer which I think is the black ones?
Anyhow the wife uses it now and shes lighter than me, thankfully ;-)
I'm 16stone big GT, played around with it, even had to strip and rebuild it, and cycled it by hand 1000's of times to get the stiction outta it.
It was only 9months back tops.
The forces don't work out, to move normal shock posts honest, did loads of phone camera watching it move, or rather not experiments, cause I was pissed off I'd wasted £60.
sinead had it off me, and barely notices it work either.
I run mine, with alot softer than I'm supposed to, 2 below maybe, anything less and it doesn't sag and then it doesn't work either, but hey!! ST's different anyways.
Try an EC 70 carbon post.really eases out the bumps and has a definite smoothing effect; USE XCR tried, alien head snapped off; Rock Shox OK until the saddle clamp bolts suddenley snapped threads out of the cylindrical nut!! Fortunately both at lower speeds..... High volume tyre too eg Mich comps helps a lot
Ordered a TB LT from the states @ 40 quid cheaper including delivery than the cheapest over here ... and its the 3g. Hopefully this will sort out the sore arse/lower back shite that has been puttin me off the bike.
Thing is Dyl, u could shift your st for a good price and get the lt. I went for the lt cos im 15 stone and this is obviously a contributing factor to the pain. 1.5" of bounce or 3"+? only 1 winner for me there.
I went ST, as don't want the HT getting too heavy, got a FS aswell, but at 16.5stone hitting roots was killing my rear wheels ( at night, the ones I didn't see till it was too late )
Didn't want to feel alot of movement either, to be honest don't feel anything but comfort.
