ok im thru with lookin at the eight miler...this is the new focus of my attention. what did this jacket get in the recent mbuk review anybody? is it waterproof waterproof or just waterproof up to a point.
event jacket is waterproof. Saw a cool comparison between goretex and event fabric. Gore tex and event sewn together over a jar which you can blow air into. pop a bit of water over the material and start to blow air through the fabric.Lots more air and moisture is able to escape quicker through the event fabric than the goretex. tried the pace jacket. Nice cut and v comfortable
The Eight Miler isn't conventionally waterproof. I had this dilemma a year ago and ended up buying the Pace 3x3. Glad I did as it's a basic no frills proper waterproof jacket that breathes well and doesn't cook you in your own sweat which is exactly what I was after.
IMO if you want a waterproof it's to keep water out but let sweat escape. If you want to stay warm, put a base and jersey or fleece on underneath.
The eVent fabric really is good and hardwearing as well. I dragged one arm of mine down a gritstone wall in an embarassing lack of skill and it's fine.
i got the impression from reviews that eVENT is better than gore....
pace was the "big value" and "winner" in performance category in mbuk test. £99.99 available from pace only.
summary of review - 3x3 uses event fabric which breathes better than anything on the market. no pit zips but velcro sleeves can be pushed up to provide enough cooling to use in autum and spring, hence 3x3. windproof with a close flap-free fit without being restrictive, with dropped tail and high collar and long sleeves. one big rear pocket only. silicon pace logos and reflective details add class. ripstop fabric low price with a fairly low pack size and weighs a light 366g.
summary - "fantastic fabric performance in a simple durable and very well priced riding jacket"
9/10
performance 10/10 protection 9/10 life 7/10 value 10/10
I think that Goretex as a brand is probably a better seller even if it's not the best fabric. For high activity eVent breathes better and is easily as waterproof. If however you want a higher level waterproofing and aren't planning to carry out hard exercise, then some of the other Gore fabrics may suit better.
I'd personally buy eVent as it sounds like an updated Pertex of old, which was an ace breathable fabric for a water-resistant bike jacket, if a little fragile.
I just ordered one of these, at least i think i did, the confirmation hasnt come through from Pace yet. Along with the Endura eVent pants from CRC, which as usual confirmed instantly.
couldnt see the extra £25 in the endura jacket, and the only had bright blue in stock, so that decided it)
I do also have a triplePoint ceramic coat (not for biking) from Lowe Alpine. I wrongly assumed that Lowe created Event themselves while waiting for their license to use Gore.
Personally I perfer pertex (for out and out wind proofing and breathability) and for years (3+) have used a buffalo systems cycle shirt in winter.
