I think speedstuff fenders are pretty good and only a fraction of the price of THE ones.Plus all the modern fenders now use an expanding rubber bung to fix them into the steerer tube so no more messing with star fangled nuts.
For a full mud guard to work well it has to cover the top of the front wheel a fair old way, other wise the flick up and foward stuff will still get you
the speedstuff and SKS have short top sections. On my Marin the SKS one I had just didnt stop any mud hitting my face. The Top Peak does
Top Peak uses a rubber bung same as SKS and is as easy to fit. On both, front and rear parts are detachable very easily if you dont need them. Its also under a tenner
Only draw back with the Top Peak is that if its heavy with mud and you hit a large bump while at speed it can flex enough to touch the top of the tyre but doesnt stop its function or do any harm
Ok, here is one for all the tight wads out there. A couple of mtb buddies use a piece of old innertube attached between the fork crown and arch with cable ties. They swear it works and I've been on some muddy rides with them and they seem to have very clean faces / chests.
