So I'm a beginner, but whats the difference between a freewheel and cassette ?

The cassette sits on the freewheel.

Cassette fits onto a splined freehub, a freewheel screws onto a threaded hub.

SoaG is right, freehubs accept cassettes, freewheels are both combined.

Cassettes are better.

And I do mean cheapo Halfords sh!te. I haven't been paying too much attention to the market of recent years but I assumed that the old freehub stuff was obsolete now.

But hey, WTF do I know? My piccies were nice tho don't you think...

Yes you can still get bikes with freewheels on. Our Ridgeback MX2 at £199 come with a seven speed freewheel.
