I have just purchased a set of fox 36 talas rc2's and am building a spesh enduro s works. Am looking to get the best wheelset i can for this bike (light vs strong) and have been looking at the dt swiss ex1750. Has anyone got these or a similar wheelset and how do you rate them. need to be a 20mm thru axle. This is the first time i have had to really think about wheels as i am building up a frame and have never really read up on them. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
i tend to ride a bit of xc and dh but only with mates, prefer to go dh as fast as i can but am quite a big bloke, 6'4'' 15 stone , so need some strong wheels (but light as poss!). the ones i am looking at come with dt swiss hubs, but have seen some on ebay that are hope pro 11 with dt swiss rims for only £225. This is half the price of the ones i am looking at but i dont know if this means they are half as good? the rims are 5.1d but i cant find any info on these on the dt swiss site so not too sure what they are.
hi jimmy, sounds like you would advise hope pro 11 and mavic 721 for me, can i buy these as a built up wheel or will i need to buy in parts and have them built for me? This is getting a bit deep( just want to buy and fit!) i think but like i say i know very little about wheels! anyone know of somewhere i can get clued up without all the marketing crap!
Have you looked at Hope Hoops? They're Pro11 hubs on DT 5.1 rims; I know a couple of people who use them for 'all-mountain'/light DH duties and they seem great. The only downside being that the hubs only come in black..
alternatively contact Merlin or Chainreactioncycles and get them to quote for your choice of spangly hope hub and DT 5.1 rim..
Hope, King, and DT are all top hubs and will be fine, so it's all about the rim choice. The Fox 36 suggests rough and tumble rather than light cross-country so I guess 719's over 717's or 5.2's over 4.2's
Dave, am the same size and weight as you and went for a set of Mavis Crossmax SX. Bloody great wheels and you can run tubeless to save some extra weight. They are lovely anno grey and have stood up to all the poor landings/crashes that I have thrown at them yet.
I have had those wheels (Hope Pro II and DT Swiss 5.1's) on the very bike you're building since Easter, no problems whatsoever, they've spent a week in Glentress, and also Coed y Brenin, Afan and numerous days at Aston Hill.
I'm running 2.4 Nobby Nics on mine.
Originally bought as a spare pair, so I could leave the Minions on the original set, but up to now I've never bothered getting the old ones out since an uplift at Cwmcarn - but based upon the hammer that the Hope/DT's have taken, I reckon that they'd but ok there as well.
