My fox triad on my stumpy 120 has popped seals for the second time in a year. I've heard lots of tales of unreliability on these shocks on stumpy 120's and even if I get it fixed for outrageous price (last time was £40 even when WITHIN warranty, now it'll be judged as being outside warranty), I'll not trust it. When it pops it messes up yer weekend / holiday etc.
Anyone tried a DT or manitou on a stumpy??? How well do they work / last or do they even fit, as the clearances are so tight. Do you need a platform shock on a stumpy to replace the pro-pedal thing?
I looked into replacing the Fox RP7 on my Stumpy a year or so ago - you have to be really careful with the shock length &, more importantly, the stroke. There's only a couple of mm tolerance on the bike so anything other than the correct stroke length will foul the linkage.
Both Mojo & TFT can adapt a standard shock to fit but it's costly.
I ended up having mine rebuilt & then PUSHed at TFTuned - expensive but cheaper than a new shock plus the adaption work (£40 on its own) and have been trouble free ever since.
Unfortunately TFT says they can PUSH a septune (RP7) but not a 2006-7 triad (RP3). But I suppose I could get it fixed from TFT.
As for the length and stroke I seem to have no trouble finding a 165 x 37.5mm shock from several manufacturers. It is the clearance within the pierced seat tube I'm worried about and am not sure whether I'll need a platform shock.
Ah, mine's an '05 so has an odd stroke length - 44mm or summat. Lucky you can find a realistic alternative but I see what you mean about the size of the shock body.
TBH the seals TFT fitted are way better than the previous couple of sets but I'm sure they said they were just the new standard Fox ones.
