Replacing Deore Lx Mech
Which XT model number do I need?

I have a Decathlon Rockrider 8.2, that came with lx dual control and a lx front mech.

A piece broke off the mech (some sort of cable guide), which means that it has lost tension and the springs pull it in toward the frame (keeping the chain off the small ring). Madison say they can't get the part (apparently they 'do not carry those parts') and my nearest Decathlon is 80 miles away round the M25. I am not sure if just tightening the cable will hold it in the right place without slipping?

I was going to buy a new XT front mech from CRC (which would cost less than driving to Decathlon and back). The only thing is there seems to be lots of similar models. The dude at Madisons said that they were all inter changeable, but I wanted to check. There seems to be ones with longer arms (called conventional - M771) and ones that are much shorter (top swing M770).

Does anyone know which one I should get? Are they simple to fit (I have removed my old gears and refitted on another bike, but didn't do loads of adjustment to the cables etc). Is this better left to a bike shop?

Any help or comments much appreciated, apart from it serving me right for living where I do!

It looks as if you need an M770 top swing (Don't forget to order the correct clamp size!) if you want the latest model XT, as for setting up; the choice is yours

Front mechs can be a bitch, if the old one leaves a mark on the frame showing where it was and the new ones collar matches up with those mark, use them as a guide.

Its not rocket science though.

I was suitably miffed when I purchased an LX front mech to replace my old a arattly one.

I tried to fit it and it seemingly all looked wrong as i had a top pull....turns out....it was dual pull all along and I'd been riding with a sloppy mech for months.

Raondom and entirely unrealted to your plight however, i just wanted to let you all know

DOH!
