I currently ride a Santa Cruz Chameleon and am looking for a change. It will have to cope with doing the the transalp (not the actual race-just following the route) and then my usual riding which is mainly steep rocky descents and steep tarmac climbs and some adventure racing (live in Hong Kong). Am looking at the carbon Trek Fuel EX9 but am not sure if it can have a QR seat post because it will weaken the frame at this point. Am also considering something like a Cotic Soda or getting something made by Seta Vento-both titanium frames but with geometry which will cope with 100-130mm fork.
Any sugestions on the lightweight, rugged and not too racy front?
If you are not racing then I would think a full suspension bike would be more fun. You'll be in the saddle for at least 6 hours a day and so you would need something to take a lot of sting out of the trail. A 4-5 inch bike would be ideal as with the Alps you can spend nearly a whole day climbing and dragging 5-6 inch 'freerider' would be no fun at all IMO. Then the descents are long fast and loose with some big rock gardens to negotiate. The Trek would be a good bike as too the Stumpy or a whole host of bikes.Depends on your budget. I'd go for a brand that is common rather some exotica as the Alps can be pretty hard on bikes and it'll be much easier sourcing parts for a well known brand if something falls off your bike.
