Anyone out there used one of them Roox S4 seatposts? I'm looking for a really long (400mm plus)and big (31.6mm) seatpost my klein, and i'm looking at either one of these two. It's gotta be fairly light, but I'm not too bothered as long as it's strong and not obscenely expensive. Any recommendations? Anyone know if roox have a website?
Roox have a website, but it'sa bit weird. I wasn;t too impressed by the S4 when I looked at it - not fantastic quality, and provides a forward position. I don't think Syncros quality is all it used to be either. I decided the options where either low price (e.g. Bontrager) or go all out for Race Face. In the end I got a very nice Bonty race-lite, with "real" EA70 tubes, reduced from an alledged 60 quid to 25. Very nice, and very long.
I still might replace with a Race face though. Another option mightbe a Salsa if you want lay-back. It's about the same prices as the S4 (55 quid) and from what I've seen, better made.
The Race Face is good as long as you're not too rough with it. Although, that said, my thick one (30.9 IIRC) has stood up to over a year of abuse, whereas my smaller one lasted less than two weeks before it needed warranty replacement.
I've got a Roox S4, it's OK and good and long but it does flex quite a lot. That can be a good thing, as it's comfy, but can be a bit worrying too. I know a couple of other people who have them and report this too, so it's not that I'm a huge pie boy :).
I tried to get a Syncros first, but they were like hens' teeth at the time. Got a source for them currently Tim?
Well apparentely chain reaction have got some, but not in the size i want (darn klein and their silly sized seat tubes). They are a bit thin on the ground at the minute, which i think is cos of the GT/Schwinn going bust thing (distributors and the like). Having some flex might be good, as my frame is pretty stiff, but i think that might be what is causing seatpost noises at the minute on my bike (either that or seatpost slippage).
I have tried the S4 and it is a good post but if you don't need the extra 3cm then go for the Raceface as the one I have has held up really well. If you don't want to shell out loads of cash you could try a selcof post which are around £20 and 400mm long and are strong enough to hold my 17.5 stone.Plus they do all sizes. If you check the reviews out on www.mtbr.com there are reports of the syncros post breaking.
Right, have been having a look around, and have seen a few other possibilities. So, any opinions on Salsa Shaft seatposts and on Thomson Elite ones (and where to get them). Also, has anyone got one of those Thomson stems, and are they any good?
Being a heavy bugger, I can be cruel to seatposts, but have had no problems with Synchros over the 3 or so yeras I've used one. Maybe try some of the American online shops? I have heard that quality did drop off during the GT era, but have also read that it has subsequently got back to normal.
Another option which worked for me was to use a long USE with 2 shims. I removed the lip on the secons shim, and fixed it to the bottom of the pin with a self tapoping screw and about 30mm of overlap. The normal shim worked as designed. This worked because teh shims were nice and thick. I gave this a real pounding (I'm about 15 stone) and had no problems, despite having a good 9 inches of pin exposed.
