A year on I think my top of the range £35 Reggeta hasn't let me down once, very nice and can wear it for ages as it breathes well. Can't agree with the avoid Goretex more, seen too many mates get soaked while remaining bone dry whilst mountaineering although years ago Goretex seems unchanged.

The Jacket that hasn't had a mention yet is the Pace Event 3x3 at £99. This Jacket has topped many of the reviews I've seen in the magazines in the last couple of years. I know a bunch of riders who swear by them. I haven't owned one myself so I can't give a personal reccommendation, but I what I've heard has impressed me, so I've got one upstairs all wrapped up for my brother's Xmas pressie. www.pace-racing.co.uk

I've a Pace 3x3 and it's the only waterproof I've had/used that is anywhere near breathable enough for hard exercise. It's a basic jacket with only 1 rear zipped pocket, velcro cuffs and not much else, but the eVent fabric works great. It's going into it's 4th winter now and still looks/works well as long as you wash it in proper stuff.

What do you wash it in? I've got a Gill eVent but I've used about 5-6 times and only wiped it down so far.

Yeah, I use NikWax Tech Wash on all technical fabrics and the TX Wash-In for re-proofing every now and then. Good stuff. Whatever you get, don't for Gods sake use normal detergent, it knackers the waterproofing abilities of the fabric and is very difficult to get rid of once done.

And if you're gonna use your washing machine clean out the powder drawer thingy properly and let the machine run empty on a rinse cycle first.

I bought one of the Altura jackets recently in their new React fabric, not over impressed - it is wetting out already and some of the seam sealing tape is not stuck down properly. However the fabric does seem fairly breathable, and is of course waterproof.

Wetting out in waterproof fabrics is what you get if washed in normal detergent as the surfactants are designed to draw water into the fibres to dislodge dirt. The problem being that they staty there when dry and hence when the rain falls, it get sucked into the fabric instead of beading and running off. If I were you Jen, I'd clean the washer out like Nobby suggests and re-proof the jacket. FWIW I have Altura Attack 3/4 shorts in React and washed/proofed them as above before using them. They were fine on a 4 hour wet ride yesterday and I was completely dry underneath afterwards. Can't comment on breathability (on shorts? what's the point) but proofing was good.
