I was wondering if anyone has tried the new Shimano SLX triple chainset yet, I'm gonna be buying a new one to replace my slightly battered Truvativ Stylo one. Was gonna give the new XT one a look, but then SLX came along a bit cheaper £60ish quid from CRC or Merlin, and it looks nice!! Is XT much lighter? want summink tough but light as I can get for around £100, I ride a 456 and like extreme XC, but no cliff hucks or extreme DH.....suggestions please!!

Apparently it's 853g for XT and 889g for SLX, so unless you're a weight obsessive, not much in it - it's not exactly going to drag your bike through the earth's crust and down into the fiery innards of the earth...

I've just fitted one, looks nicer than XT and should be as strong as anything else out there bar the heavy duty stuff like Saint. I don't think you can go far wrong with SLX unless you count the outboard bearings, but there you go

oooooohh....36g!!! That much!! Nah I wouldn't say I was a weight obsessive, think I can cope with that! So, you reckon SLX looks nicer than XT too? I haven't seen SLX in the flesh as such, bit the pics look good...is the face bare polished like XTR, looks like it in pics? Are the BB's still pants then? Thought I read somewhere that they were better now!? My GXP bearings are pretty defunct, mates got a Superstar Ceramic BB on his Maxlight and its super smooooth, might be the go....cheers

Yeah, they do look nice. Sort of XTR-ish but chunkier - the middle ring is steel with the resin, or whatever it is, reinforcement as well. Dunno about the bearings. It's a bit early to say, but from what I've seen, it's a weakness with the design in some UK conditions. The Peak District kills them in weeks, but you might be luckier with your riding conditions...

I think SLX chainsets look great actually, definitely where my money would go if I wasn't wanting to spend lots on a chainset!

nice one guys! Yeah like the look of SLX, think thats what I'm gonna go for, bit of a bargain too really, I mean £65 isn't a lot for a whole hollowtech chainset, plus the composite middle ring thing as found on XT XTR! Cheers for the feedback guys.

Where you found 'em for £65?

Yeah, I just bought an LX for £60, but if I could have got an SLX for £65 I most certainly would have done.

Both Merlin and CRC were doing for that price a couple of days ago, still only £90ish full price, so still reasonable. They were doing XT for £80 too which is a bit of a steal! Thats why I was asking what was best XT or SLX.

SLX are £80 at the minute which is why I wondered.

Yep, just spotted that...bummer, missed the boat there I think, they were defo £65 last week!!

Once I saw the MX Pro LO fork for £125 on Merlin, whilst at the same time they were selling the version without lockout for ~£140 which was kind of odd. I e-mailed them to confirm the fork travel, but by the time I received a reply they had put the price up! Rascals.

I bought an SLX chainset from CRC when they had the offer on, bl00dy bargain if you ask me. Fitting was easy and they only come second to XTR in the looks department in my opinion.

This isn't my bike but should give you a good idea on the finish of the crank arms.
