Decided that I need a new set of forks. My Pace Fighters have frustrated the hell out of me and after biting the mud hard twice this weekend due to packing down due to a lack of rebound. I've run out of patience.
If you were me with a Nicolai Helius CC used for all mountain riding what would you go for? I need at least 140mm. So the Fox's would seem to be the currrent flavour of the month.
It packs down no matter what you do to the rebound adjuster!
Worked perfectly for the first 12 months and been nothing but a pain since. Your right 140 mm is the max the bike will take and 130 mm or 120 mm rides far better in most conditions.
So far Rockshox - Pike and Revelation are the views so far.
Any views on the Magura Thor? The local bike shop is raving about them.
I've not used the latest Talas but the recent Fox forks I have tried have had absolutely spot -on damping to the point where, say, and F120, feels like it has more travel than it actually does because everything is so well controlled.
That said, I have history with self-destructing Fox fork tubes. Right now I'd probably go for a Pike - or '09 Rev with Maxle Lite - from TF Tuned with the Push upgrade to the rebound damping circuit. Awesome fork, stays calm beyond the point where the stock Pike gets a bit pannicked, get the U-Turn version and you can adjust travel to suit.
Pace Fighters are luverly forks, they just need a oil change / service much cheaper than a new fork ( horrible rebound adjustment position though, just stupid design )
Aren't this year's Revs with the Maxle Lite basically a Pike then? But with a lighter Maxle? I've found the air Pikes a pretty good compromise, the 454 ones with the hollow crown. The 140mm Revelation with Maxle thing is kind of confusing...
Pikes are generally great, but the rebound damping sometimes gets a bit overwhelmed with repeated sharp hits, like really caning it through Peak rock gardens when it can all get a bit iffy because the basic damping circuit can't quite cope with the amount of oil it's being asked to flow and the front end gets a bit crashy.
The Push upgrade makes them feel more composed on stuff like that and generally very together, but it's the icing on the cake. I'm not saying that're crap as standard. I was a bit dubious before I got them Pushed, but you can feel the difference. They also seem to sit a bit higher in the travel generally and dive a bit less under braking.
Or maybe I'm just imagining it all. I like 'em anyway
Si only had XCAM 130mm versions, can't remember if they where coil or air, yeah the rebound speed it generally quite fast.
Paul's ie Sinead's BF has the Fighters there very nice, stupidly light for there travel if your into that kinda thing, plushest forks ever but better damping would be nicer 10wt oil would likely sort it though.
Juan you need the dual damping of the 09's ( well in the Reba's dunno if they've rolled it out all round yet ), fast action for small hits so it'll respond better for rock gardens and feel less locked out as it'll extend more between hits and slow for big hits so less pogo like without having to sit in the middle compromised for both.
Can't see how damping, would make them sit higher in the travel though.

Yeah, we got tired of all that super smooth, buff singetrack, and built a few rockeries to spice things up a bit
On the ride height thing, yep, the whole damping circuit gets a going over, as I understand it. TFt's recommended air pressures post Push are 120 positive, 130 negative. If you run that on a standard Dual Air Pike, it'll drag it down into its travel, but on the Pushed Pike it stays up at 140mm regardless.
Thanks guys. Thats a wrap. Yes I have had the Pace forks serviced 5 times in two years. The last time by Pace at the beginning of the summer. When everything is straightforward then no problem - but then so would a pogo stick. Its rock gardens or steep drop offs with a sharp rise immediately afterwoulds that cause the problem (as for jumps I've given up). The Pace ends up packed down and I'm totally dependent on momentum to get me out of trouble. Its causing me to lose my nerve and thats not a good feedback loop to get into. Yes I have changed the amount of air - upping it to be a pretty hard ride. I've changed the travel. I've moved the rebound dial everywhere. No joy really. As I said before absolutely great - best ever forks for 12 months (possibly 18 I may have exaggerated in my anger) then just awful - fussy, finicky and the maintenance has been bloody expensive.
Pushed Pike and the Fox 32s seem to be the answer. Though I don't know what weight of oil has been used in the Pace and whether changing that may make a difference. Good thought though.
Fox 140's on my Nicolai Helius CC are fantastic, I can't imagine having anything with less travel on there too be honest, it would feel too steep for me. I use mine for anything from 100k Merida's to balls out descents down Golspie and it copes admirably with all of it.
