I got no material relating to these brakes when I bought the bike (the fork manual was for the wrong models too!) and I want to know how to adjust/service them and what fluid/pads I need. They're Promax brakes but aren't listed on the Promax www site. Are they an old model?

Thanks for any help recd.

Jim.

I would go back to the shop if i were you. we have had that bike where i work and the disks came with some instructions (admitedly fairly poor instructions) they could be an older model as you say but i wouldn't be able to tell you for definite. You could try and contact dawes for some info also, www.dawescycles.com? (not exactly sure of that either)

I found them very difficult to set up and perhaps our set needed bleeding but the lever feel was really quite bad, how are yours?

I have got some instructions somewhere If I find em I will mail you and send a copy they are as Tom said rather basic. Mine are great feel etc but a bit fiddly to set up with that silly adjuster screw I love the brakes its the bloody crankset I hate!

From the shop the rear brake was fine, you don't have to pull the lever very far at all, but the front one comes back to within 1/2 in. of the grip. I've tried the adjusters but I think there's air in it.

I see that the disc doesn't run in the centre of the caliper and is VERY close to(touching?) it. Can the position of the hub on the axle be changed to shift it over a tad or does the caliper need thinner washers against the fork? Can I remove them even?? (yes, I am new to susp forks/discs!)

PH - that would be helpful, thanks.

I need some help, my acoma is the first bike i have run with hydraulic discs. I had a small problem with the rear when i first got it, but my local shop bled it up for me and its been great. He mentioned adjustment on the caliper itself, i got instructions with the bike for the brakes and in agrement with the purple helmet very basic and they explain nothing. Do i need to adjust them and how??????

Adjustment depends on the type of caliper, but if it has 2 pistons pushing toward each other then the disc should be as near to the centre of the slot as possible. I'd expect this to be adjusted by adding or removing washers/shims of different thicknesses between the caliper and fork mounts. If you aready have no washers between them and the caliper needs to go further over then you could get the mounts faced (i.e. a small amount of metal taken off) by the shop. I wouldn't recommend trying to do this yourself unless you're quite skilled with tools.

I have had a look at the adjustment he was talking about, the caliper appears to have 2 allen headed adjusters one either side of the caliper. I tried one full turn in withe the outer adjuster and it seems to close the tolerance btween the disc and outer pad?
Also how long do a set of pads usually last?
I ride mainly off road at a weekend, and a few miles on road during the week, they get a good hammering at the weekend.
