weather may be nice much of the time but up in the mountaisn it could get cold and windy, and theres always the possibility (likelihood) of heavy rain even in Feb.

Could be riding in this for whole days - 5 hours in teh rain isa possibility.

primarily for MTBing, so will have to be carried around in my pack when not in use, but also for more general use would be ideal.

 So:

  • breathable (eVent would be great)
  • fully waterproof
  • hood (detachable ok)
  • with arm pit vents would be perfect.
  • available in other than black!!  I dont want to be road kill!!
  • weight about 500g or less, certainly not more than about
  • budget: up to about £150

seriously, its the best way of describing the conditions, which are somewhat particular to that sort of terrain (lush forest/wet plains/mountainous).

Montane storm rider, available for 130 if you shop around

Ground Effect gear is awesome. Having just got back from NZ the riding is superb. Rotarua has got to be one of the best places I've ever riden, endless singletrack heaven. You MUST ride there fpdave, no excuses!

Also unless you are taking your own bike check out Bike Vegas in Rotarua for a good hire fleet as the bkes to hire near the trail centre aren't great.

Let me know if you want anymore info.

I'm on a 15 day ride around the south island then a few days kayaking (maybe) in the south and then perhaps 10 days around the north.  I'll try to get to ride at Rotorua as you advise.

ground effect stuff is great ime.

apart from their w/proof jackets. which, ime of 2 years with a storm trooper (their top model), are pretty rubbish.

the fit, features and looks are reallly good, just totally let down by the fabric, which ime was hot, sweaty, and not waterproof for long.

i finally got the money to splash out on an endura event jacket, and the difference is amazing.

however, i will continue to buy other ground effect stuff, cos it really is good.

Spent an afternoon in Rotarua forest on a crappy hire bike with baldy tyres last Jan.The singletrack is probably some of the best I have seen in the world, incredible flow, and REALLY grippy.Even with the shed I was on,I managed to cane it through the trees with a couple of locals - one of those days whan you KNOW its perfect. So my advice is sell the house/kids/wife/dog,whatever,and go there. You will not regret it.I live near Golspie/Learnie and even they can't match Rotarua for sheer scale,it has something for everyone. Cheers NZ

New Zealand Herald.

Interesting in the emphasis it puts on the cyclist not wearing a helmet (while not actually stating he died of head injuries), but plays down the fact he'd been hit by a truck, and cycled for the previous three years with no problems. This attitude is common in NZ.

agreed, drivers were pretty careless about bikes - but mostly kept off main roads.  Tho most main roads have a 1.5metre wide margin that gives some protection, except that NZ drivers use it on corners to get a better racing line.

would a helmet really provide much protection if hit by a truck anyway?

Oh, and I got a Rab eVent jacket - not cycling specific, and possibly not vented enough for much cycling, but a great all-rounder and lightweight.  Only got rained on one day anyway, and that was whilst walking around Auckland - just went to the museum!
