Flats, clipless, or in between...?
Looking for advice about new pedal choice

Hi peeps,

I'm looking for some advice about choosing some new pedals. I've just got a new Kona Caldera and it comes with cheap Shimano clipless pedals, thing is I hate them. I have used clipless pedals before and was running Time ATAC's; that was until I was knocked off my bike in an accident.

As I've lost confidence with clipless pedals at the moment (although they weren't a factor in my accident) I'm thinking about getting some combination pedals i.e. ATAC Z Control pedals.

Are these an ideal half-way house which will let me run them as clipless and platforms brilliantly, or neither one thing nor the other and a waste of money? Any advice/experience greatly welcomed!

Stick with shimano

get the shimano ones with the cage surround, they let you pedal in trainers and make setting of on rough terrain easier until you can clip in
I don't find "combination pedals work well without proper cleated cycling shoes. They are OK to pop to the corner shop, but not much more.

MY cheap £13 old fashioned looking Bear Traps have NEVER and I mean NEVER slipped in over 1 year of use,  yes they hurt when they bash your shins but just makes you man up.

Completely agree. The advantages of caged pedals like the shimano m647's are that they give good stability for your foot, especially if your wearing shoes with a more flexible sole. However, the mechanism still sticks up from the cage making them difficult to use properly with flat shoes.

Your best bet is to make a decision as to whether it's going to be flats or clipless and then choose the best pedals/shoes accordingly.

Cheers guys,

I have to admit, I've only ever used Time clipless before and this is the first time I've tried the Shimano variant. I have found them much harder to clip into and I miss the float I had on the Time, so I don't think I'll be going with the Shimano's.

I've been looking at the Crank Brothers Candy SL's, anyone used them or got an opinion on these?

If your not comfortable with cliples pedals, you can't go wrong with a pair of mx30's

I have to say that I don't like 'combination' flat/clipless pedals either tbh. When I first started riding and doing technical stuff, I wanted the freedom to be able to unclip. But clipless type shoes just end up being dangerously slippy as the cleat and mechanism just slide around on each other regardless of the size of the platform. I would say either go clipless or flat, but if you must have a platform/clipless combo I would recommend the Crank Bros Mallet, I found those to be the best option after trying a few similar types of pedals. The only problem with Crank Bros is that you will need to grease the bearings regularly.

I used the candy sl's for about 2 years ( until the pedal came off the spindle causing injury! ) they are a really good pedal. There is enough platform to get going before you clip in on the rough stuff.

I use eggbeaters now which are really good and dont get clogged with mud. Both are easy to clip in and out of, bear in mind they dont have the adjustablity of the shimano pedals just 2 settings - easy to unclip or hard to unclip decided which cleat you put on which shoe.

Good luck with finding the right choice but the sooner you start clipping in again the easier it will be.

Flats and grippy trainers/5'10's.  Far more confidence inspiring than clipins.
