Got the Hope BB. LBS says I need to have the shell faced even though I had it done 8 months ago for the old one. What do you reckon? Essential or not? Thanks.

If it was done properly the first time then I don't sse any point in doing it again.

on a similiar note, would you trust the  facing on a frame with a  factory fitted  BB ?

The very good LBS, after so many warranty returns for HT2 BB's' started stripping down new bikes and facing the shells. Problem just about went away.

Asfor doing a second facing lets hope its a 73 mm shell cos you will soon have a 68 mm one with all that facing.

Chris King are supplying shims with their BB to make up the material that you remove when you face the BB shell.

I had mine done after a respray.

Yes I was thinking. How many times can you face the shell!!!!????

I can't see a rason for doing it more than once, unless it's damaged or done badly the first time.

Agree with Mike - once it's done, it's done.

its a one shot affair that you do when you have done the frame to remove any imperfections and make sure its straight. Unless you have had the chain off the inside ring a lot and fouled up where the bottom bracket meeets the frame.

Bit of brake cleaner and some blue mechanics  paper should clear it

I don't see what that has to do with facing the 'faces' of the frame, as the damage you'll be talking about will be superficial exterior damage and have nothing to do with the bearings.

I had to replace one of the original 2mm spacers with a 3mm one from and eight-speed cassette after facing.

And yet when I said that should be standard practice for all shops I got boo'd off STW. It just makes sense to do it, take 10 minutes tops (if you have to remove the cranks & BB, less if it's frame only), and means much less chance of problems.

It should only be a one time job unless (as plenty have said) something has happened to distort the face.

Nice to see your bike shop thinking about it though

Thanks guys. I'll get the BB off and see what the surfaces look like. I reckon it will be OK though.

facing doesnt actually have much to do with the bearings themselves mate. it just makes sure the bearing housing fits flat and straight  on the frame (this is for OBB's not cartridge bearings such as octalink or square tapered). Theoretically if somone really bangs the chain off and slams into the edge of the frame bottom bracket area and really chews one edge then it may have a slight imperfection that could do with a quick spin with the facing tool. But again it would take a lot of damage to need facing again.

On my enduro i have 3 bolt holes to attach a chain device..these are pretty fouled due to the above happening on my bike a few times so in my view this could happen to an unprotected bracket area.

This is often all that's needed to check if a frame actually needs to be faced.  Why some seem to feel the need to take 1mm off each side just to see if the shell needs facing is beyond me.

When I have faced frames it is literally a quick spin to remove paint imperfections.  The trick I use is to put marker pen on the surface to be faced and one that is all gone you know the surface is level.  It shouldn't take any force at all really.

Agree totally

My S-works didnt need facing at all.  They checked the BB and the headtube all was  funky.

The armadillo and jack flash were manky as an old log with paint and all kinds of undesirable shite in both of those areas and they where sorted accordingly.

Removed BB and surfaces of the shell were perfectly OK and smooth. Not even tarnished. There was a very slight burr which I sanded as adviced. Put new BB in. No probs. Thanks.
