Are 9sp road cassettes the same width as an Mtb 9sp?. My commute / can't be arsed to get wet & muddy again / lack of time ride is a Boardman hybrid running X5 & X7 with an off road cassette on it & find I only ever use 3 gears, I'm not sure what the cassette is but I'm looking to replace it with a close ratio block (Ultegra)

Yes a Shimano road cassette will work as will a SRAM one.

i've been running ultegra 12-27's for nearly 2 years offroad and have no plans to switch back to mtb 'specific' offerings.

Bloody hell, between posting this and getting round to ordering one (yesterday) the price has gone up by over a tenner on CRC. Settled for a SRAM instead 11-23.

Settled!? I always choose SRAM chains and cassettes. Shimano for mechs and shifters tho'.

OK, settled is perhaps the wrong word. I've always used XT in the past as it's been good value for the performance & weight. Things have changed somewhat in the current climate.

My son uses road cassettes in his DH bike, cheap and lighter than XTR - and then add a short cage mech.
