Chaps, Which one to go for, Mavic Crosstrail (6bolt) or Crossride or bust the bank and go for crossmax??? ive found Crosstrail for £283 from Pedal on...  ????

I bought the Crosstrails as I wanted UST and the reliability of steel spokes, and wasn't worried about a few extra grams. I highly recommend the front wheel but the cassette body is till the weak point on the rear. After 18 months and hardly ever getting wet the characteristic drag and rumble have started.

Don't buy Crossmax. You can get lighter, stronger, stiffer, more reliable and/or cheaper, depending on your preferences!

Why only Mavic wheels?

There's nothing wrong with them per se, I just wondered if there was a specific reason, like you could get them super cheap or something.

I'd say custom building is the way forward. What use are you giving them? Presumably XC if you're thinking of Crossmax?

I'd get Pro IIs on Olympics: Clicky

I like mavic wheels, especially the crossmax. Yes you can get "even lighter" if you want, but they are rock solid and I dont think any other wheel can offer the same strength for the same weight. I have a 5 year old set and have never had them trued. They still run in a perfect line.

Yes, sometimes the free hub can be a bit dodgy, but regular maintenance takes care of that.

I've also had some crosstrails and for the price you cant go wrong with them. I ran a set around the peaks running a 2.25 tyre on them, with no problem. I then sold them to a riding buddy and he continues to bash them round. They just keep going.

For me Mavic wheels work, no need to look elsewhere.

oh, and I have a brand new set of crosstrails for sale at the moment. Only had tyres and disc fitted, never used. Let me know if you are interested as they are listed on a rival website!
