I noticed on the reservoir on my 2nd bike (so its not used much that), when I squeezed the brake lever on the Avid Juicy 7s, a small amount of fluid was seeping out between the body and top cap. Now I've not loosened the cap, not used the bike for a while and the brake seems to respond fine, not mushy so I'm wondering why it's doing this? Could the top cap just need tightening or do they need a bleed or something else entirely like new seals?
You need the top cap and seal kit, £8 each from crc, do both sides though as if one has gone the other will be thereabouts. Over time the dot fluid eats the rubber which loses its sealing capability. You will then need to bleed the system. If you do it now you'll save the lever from being corroded by the fluid between the seal and top cap.
I had to do mine last year, had been oozing for a while but had got t point where air was entering rear brake and going spongy and inneffective during a ride. Due to leaving it for too long the thin bit of lever body that the seal sits on corroded and had to be delicately rubbed down with fine grit paper to regain a sealing surface.
