And I need some replacement chainrings... I'm buggered if I'm going to spend £100+ on the outer ring alone from Shimano. Does anyone know if Middleburn / TA etc do replacements for it?

Cheers,

TWI

How impressively old school, didn't think anyone was still using those.

Sadly those were proprietary rings, and seeing as it's from 2002 at the very latest I doubt you'll find many alternatives! If you had the 5-arm one you'd be fine, c'est la vie!

It'll be cheaper to buy an XT HT2 chainset, which will also weigh less, be stiffer and have superior bottom bracket life.

They're currently on my retro bike which is a 12.5" 1996  Ball-Burnished GT Zaskar, which has a full M950 XTR groupset and 1996 Judy SLs which, suprisingly, still work just fine!

I know that the "easy", and probably most sensible option would be to do exactly as you say, and get a modern XT chainset - But I really really really want to try to keep the bike original, and avoid fitting new parts unless I really have no alternative!

I'm going to keep hunting around to see if there are any replacement chainrings about - If not, then I've spotted a lovely set of Cook Bros cranks from back in the day that would compliment the bike just fine

Cheers for the advice though

Welsh, have you tried emailing your question to Middleburn and attaching your chainset picture? I think they do quite a wide range of fittings so you might get lucky.

PS. How Did you post that piccie? - I'd love to post some piccies.

I didn't think of that - I'll fire an email across to them now.... I could do with some nice silver and red chainrings to go with the colourscheme

As for posting a pic, it's simple enough in theory - There's a little picture icon up there on the message toolbar. Just click it and it lets you insert an image, either from your BM gallery, from the web, or from your computer... In practice it's not quite so simple... It's a little tempramental!!!
