Just bought the Garmin Vista C from 'arry (thanks very much btw)and am well chuffed with it. Unfortunately I have been bitten by the gps bug and while initially I only wanted something to record my tracks so that I could download them onto google maps/earth now I want a decent basemap of my own to replace the bog standard one that comes with the garmin mapsource software. Few issues that I aint sure about! If I want to stick with the mapsource software is the only option available to me the £150 British Isles map that they are flogging or can you import other maps from elsewhere to use as a basemap on mapsource? The other issue is that if I move to memory map which is having a sale I can get a map for northern Scotland for around £48 which covers everything that I am likely to be doing in the future. However are the two systems fully compatible (Garmin/mapsource v MMap) or am I going to be left with the low res basemap on my Garmin that it came with?
Sorry if it is a little longwinded but want some advice before I shell out on new software.

The garmin mapsource isn't very good, it doesn't realy add a great deal to the experience of using the gps.

MM is great for route planning on the computer, but you can only download the route to the gps and not the map.

Personally I would buy MM and make do with what you have already on the gps unit.

Thanks MSP, pretty much what I suspected. I get an elevation profile as well as my tracks recorded from my GPS which is pretty much all I want. Not really bothered about trail satnav at the end of the day though I think I will splash out on MM for route management. Is it easy enough to import to Google earth from MM?

Yes. I think you just save it as a KML file and load it as such.

I am off to buy it now!
