pedals or cleats worn out?

Of late I've found my feet coming out of my cleats when I least want them to - ie in the air - is this because the cleats are worn or the pedals themselves? I'm using Shimano 959 pedals and SH-51 cleats which have performed very well for the last five years or so.

I'd say cleats. Do your cleats look worn?

Why does 'cleat' sound rude?

They last a hell of a long time - check to see if the engagment mechanism simply needs tightening up if you haven't already.
I tend to find that when cleats start to wear it actually makes it harder to disengage the pedals, so as owls said I would check the tension on the pedal first.

Thanks for the input. I have tightened them up several times - I usually run them pretty loose - so I guess it's not that. The cleats don't look very worn neither do the pedals but they have had a few encounters with rocks over the last few years.

I am surprised your cleats haven't worn down! i had those same pedals for about 5 years also, but went through about 3 sets of cleats before the pedals themselves starting getting a little rattly and hard to disengage. It was only when switching to brand new XTR ones that i realised how worn out my old pedals were.

when your cleats get worn, there are sort of gouges/concave sections worn into the surface, from twisting in and out. cant show you a photo as i currently have new cleats.

I'd say cleats, I find mine tend to start falling out of the pedals when they get worn!

There is quite heavy wear on the outside edge of both cleats, it goes into the bolt edge as well - presumably where I'm pressing on the pedal. Not sure if this would affect matters but will replace the cleats first in the hope that it gets things sorted

cleats are made from brass so they wear out before the pedals...try new cleats
