Can anyone explain why various bike reviewers say that the combination of the Blur Carbon XC and Sram XX will not work as the latter supposedly does not fit while the company Competative Cycles in the USA will make up and sell you a complete bike fitted with these componants,

Who is right?? It would be nice to have some clarification on this matter

"One thing that you won't be able to do is fit SRAM's forthcoming XX twin-ring chainset to it - the Blur's wide lower link and generous tyre clearance mean that it won't fit. We wouldn't let that put us off the frame, though..."

Santa Cruz say it won't fit, and they'd hardly say it didn't if it did. I expect that Competitive Cyclist have some sort of automated thing on the site that just adds build kit prices to frame prices but can't cope with weirdy exceptions.

From the Blur XC FAQ page:

Is the new SRAM XX group compatible with the Blur XC Carbon?

Unfortunately, no. All of our current models (including the Blur XC Carbon) were designed to have the maximum tire/mud clearance- while still clearing all available cranksets on the market. Unfortunately the XX is significantly narrower in the chainring area than anything else on the marketplace, and just doesn't fit on our bikes. This is due to the larger size chainrings and decreased chainline of the system.

They're not wildly happy about it, but there it is

Gutted, that was a bit of an omission considering it's only been out 10 minutes!

Does that mean you're precluded from using any double chainset? I didn't think the Q-factor on XX was owt special.

There are two q-factor options available for XX too, but one assumes SC have tried both?

How long before the new 'low profile swing link to improve heel clearance, stiffen the back end up 54.58% and allow the use of XX cranks' appears?

Or how about a Ducati 916 Style rear swing arm so mud clearance isn't so much of an issue?

Q-factor is the end of the cranks, which isn't where the problem lies. The clearance issue is at the chainring end - both versions of the XX crank have the same chainline, so the rings are the same distance out from the centerline.

Not really. SC had essentially finished the Blur XC before SRAM announced XX.

So why not fit a triple at the front and have even more gears to play with?

If you're buying a race frame and want to fit racing groupsets I don't think you're riding with a triple

is fitting the XX really going to make that much differance to the average racer on a santa cruz blur? as apposed to a XTR twin ring set up?

you could argue that the extra mud clearance would be more helpful during the muddy season.

It'll make the very substantial difference that his or her cranks won't go round

I think Cruz have got it right and SRAM wrong. I like a narrow Q on my roadies but plenty of tyre to chain clearance on my MTBs. I fitted a 29 middle ring on my snow bike so I didn't need the granny which resulted in a chain plastered in snow. On local events I'll grind through sticky mud on the middle ring to avoid a mud plastered chain for the rest of the course.

Hey guys,
Scott from Santa Cruz here. My trusty Google Alert system pointed me to this thread. lots of good comments here, but just to clear up any misconceptions....
XX cranks in the narrow form factor (156mm q-factor) won't work on the Blur-XC (or any other Santa Cruz model for that matter) as it does not have enough clearance for chainrings (As Mike pointed out), nor enough crank clearance at the chainstays.
As others have mentioned, this is all due to our bikes being designed around standard MTB q-factor and chainline specs to get the most tire clearance possible, along with great stiffness out of the chainstays/swingarm. Making the frame compatible with the narrow form factor would reduce tire clearance and/or reduce swingarm stiffness and we worked too hard to get these specifc features where we like them!
The good news for you guys that really want XX, is that it looks like SRAM is going to offer a normal (166mm) q-factor version of the crank as well that should work on our XC models. We got our hands on some now and are testing things out and should have the 'official' word on compatibility for all models soon. Feel free to email me with any questions at - info @ santacruzbicycles.com

Thanks
Scott
