Hi guys,

I saw that this topic was on this forum but ages ago.... I want to buy a front disc brake to my bike. I am around 12 -13 stones and I like XC style of cycling. Decided to buy good stuff, which I always thought is shimano xt but.... when i went to shop and ask about shimano xt break (setup) guy said that for this money i can get a hope setup which is better. i am not British and never heard about hope company. Could you help me?

Hope are good but there's nothing wrong with XT. I've ran various brakes from both companies and prefer Shimano.

If hope had shimanos reliability they'd be awesome
If shimanos were half as maintainable as hopes they'd be awesome

pick one

So there isn’t a huge different between them? But there is suggestion that is easier to maintain hope one – great. It’s confusing a bitJ maybe you have a suggestion for brake around 150 quid for a setup?I know that shimano xt is very good stuff therefore i  pick it up firstly.

Depends which Hope brakes  you are looking at, a lot of negatives about Hope brakes my current ones M4s have had no problems in 18 months. Older hopes did need a bit of maintainance.

I also run Simano M555s on a hard tail and they are coming up 6 years old with no maintainance except 2 fluid changes and lots of pads.

They dont stop as well as Hope M4s, and I have had them fade once on a hot day when tanking downhill.

What XC said...

The Shimano ones need NO maintenance...and when they break you can't fix them because well you can't buy shimano parts to fix them.

The Hope ones do NEED maintenance but when they break hope sell every single little part you need

ed: Hope brakes on my riding bike and LX brakes on my hack bike...both seem to stop the bike as they should
