Hi

Can anybody recommend a good 2 bike rack that will fit on the back of a V Reg Fiat Punto (old shape) without the need for a lighting board and all the electrical sockets being installed ?.

Any suggestions or advice most gratefully accepted

Cheers

Tom

Tom,
Only a roof rack will suit, as the light clusters on a punto are too high, even for a high lifting rear rack. Ive got fiat bars and Halford bike racks on mine, 100 quid for two bikes all in.

I'll second Ben's comments on that. I've just had a look at a Punto in our car park. Whilst some racks will place the bikes above the lights and number plate, the Punto's lights are quite high. Make sure you buy a carrier with a ratchet action instead of the stupid clamps which I bought. It requires tightening by hand a by the end of the journey, the clamp resides behind the crank and it's a tricky and dirty job undoing it.

If you, or anyone else, is looking for a range of cycle racks check out the Paddy Hopkirk range - often stocked by motor factor-type shops. There are about 10 different configurations and mine pushed the bike as high above the lights (I haven't got a punto) as I could wish.

Even high-lift racks still obscure the light clusters on Puntos – the only solutions is a trailer board or roofrack. A trailerboard is a hassle and a roofrack slows you down a fair bit and adds maybe 20% to fuel consumption if you put two bikes on it – difference is barely noticeable with one.
I have a Thule locking roofrack for my Punto (97 P-reg so should be same shape as yours), that I may need have to sell soon - someone drove into the back of me last week and my Punto is almost certainly going to be written off. It's a good solid rack that has never given me any problems but as I’ll probably replace the Punto with something bigger none of the bits are likely to fit the new car. I also have a couple of 2 Thule bike carriers (the basic black ones that clamp the downtube and strap onto both wheels) but unless I go for a towbar-mounted carrier I’ll keep them. The Thule rack is sturdier than the Fiat one and when I bought it 2 years ago, Paddy Hopkirk didn’t do one for a Punto. Drop me an e-mail if you’re interested...

I will bear this in mind...do you intend to sell all the stuff to fit the rack as well ? (Ie roof bars) I am not very clued up on what i actually require. (Apart from a decent motor !!!)

Cheers
