sprocket is about 2 years old but only had about 12 months use in an on-off fashion. i had a quick look at the sprocket and chainring and didnt notice any considerable wear. maybe a new chain as my next point of call.
er not sure whats happend to the message above... strange... I was trying to see if anyone had some route recommendations from Furness Vale.. I want to do some night rides straight from work but as I don't live around here I'm not too familiar with possible routes.
Chris / Gav / Dave are all New Mills locals and I'm sure can point you in the right direction. There's loads round there, but for an easy option, head up onto Chinley Churn etc then take your pick around Hayfield then loop back?
Why not come out with us on Thursday night starting Whaley Bridge or Hayfield maybe?
All those randomly located smileys in there are quite funny, thanks Simon!
Thursday should be fine for me - just name the spot.
From Furness Vale you can either head south, up the road by the Chinese restaurant, which then splits after about 300m signposted towards a campsite (left) which ends in a bridleway towards Whaley Bridge or right, which takes you up a rather monotonous lane/bridleway up to Diglee Farm. There's a rocky/lumpy descent back down Upper Greenshall Lane about 1500m to the north on that B road, that takes you back down to the A6, or another (more muddy) descent that pops you out by the Newtown Station.
Erm, or you can just do as Jon says and head up Chinley....
There are a number of routes near Furness in the Dark Peak mountain bike guide - they sell it in the bike shop in New Mills or the Bike Factory in Whaley. You've got a handful of 2 hour-ish rides you could do from Furness Vale - round Whaley, Goyt Valley, New Mills, Hayfield etc.
There is free expert guiding available on Thursday nights or you could join up with the Hayfield Hub lot who go on a Wednesday night at 7:30. What time do you finish work?
Thanks Chris / Gavin. I've actually got that Dark Peak guide... forgot to look in there.
I usually finish around 5:30... that was the cunning plan to head straight out from work, rather than becoming lethergic on my drive home to Sheffield (as I often do). Sometimes I'll take the bike to work then stop at Ladybower Inn and start from that point, but this year I thought I'd try something different to keep the enthusiasm up. The Ride that we did with you last year Chris is the only one I've done around these parts, and I was impressed with the trails available.
yeh...one day I'll make it to a Thursday night ride... when I've had some leg and lung implants
Simon - the Disley Circuit is the ideal one for looking at some of the lanes around Furness Vale. It pretty much does the route I tried to describe, but in reverse. The climb up Upper Greenshall Lane is always a bit of a thrash as its quite loose, and the descent back to Furness Vale can feel a bit of a let-down, after all the effort, so I tend to reverse it and possibly head down the little bridleway that brings you to New Mills Newtown station (if its been dry for a week or two)...ok, forget about that one!
The best all-weather stuff is probably around Whaley Bridge/Buxton area and quite gentle (mostly). Other than that, the riding over by Hayfield is the best for something 'different', as opposed to Ladybower. At the moment, I'd avoid most of the trails on Chinley as the top section will be a bog-fest, well certainly the area around the New Allotments and the drop down to Phoside Farm will be a good slide!
If you are passing Furness Vale, you can't be too far from Marple Bridge and the Roman Lakes area - there's tons of great trails around there, and all are good in all weathers. Again, I think there are some routes in the Dark Peak guide, but a quick look at the map and you'll see plenty of bridleways, byways and [cough] other trails that will please time and again!
Thanks Gavin / Chris for the info. Forgot about the All weather ness..... Although I'm forcing myself to learn to ride a hardtail this winter. I have just finished building up a 456SS, feels nice so far.
There used to be a really good one in Hyde, dunno if he's still there though - was a long time ago, ex-partner in the 90s used him. May be worth checking with Up and Running in Hyde. Good shop and I think they might even have an in-shop service.
Not local, but the Rebound Clinic up in Settle is excellent if you find yourself up that way. Fella called Andrew Stanley.
