i have just bought a newer car and i dont want to wreck the interior so need a rack or roof mounted carriers (i have roof bars and a towbar)the thule 9402 racks seem quite cheap at about £65 but are they any good?
I bought a thule towbar one from halfords in the summer, cant remember how much, its the 9403 and its great, i like the idea that you can tilt it so you can access the boot.
Also there is no movment when its fully loaded and fuel consumption is not affected much.
I use the Thule roof bars with a couple of THULE FREERIDE 575 BIKE CARRIERS - THey are about the cheapest available made by Thule and to be honest i wish I'd spent the extra to get the 591 PRORIDE. The problem with the 575 is it is VERY difficult to get the frame gripped tightly. No matter how hard you try it seems to move slightly and has caused some very worrying 'grip-marks/scratches' on the frame. Need to packout the grip area and see if that helps the problem without leaving the bike loose.
simple answer no. this is a shockingly bad design. my mates got 1 and he put my £2500 epic on, drove 2 miles in his 4x4 and realised when we'd got to the destination that my bike was hanging off. the centre strap snapped leaving just the wheel straps holding the bike. £272 later (1 hope mini brake destroyed along with 1 xtr shifter, 1 bontrager grip, 1 lupine pasubio xl, and 1 fsa k force carbon handlebar. so angry it was untrue. stay away
I've had a Thule tow-bar (9403) rack for years, they are very good - plus my riding pal has one of the more expensive models (946) - even better.
With the roof ones there is a quite large fuel cost, especially at speed and the usually the need to take the wheels off and the fact that you must remember they are there for height restrictions...
Any bike that falls off a tow-bar rack, is usually down to user-error... been there
Arry Monk - Try wrapping a small section of an old lizard skin around the downtube where the clamps fit. This saves on scrathing and wear marks on the frame. Make sure after a ride that you clean the frame or behind the skin first. Ive been doning this for years with my Thule system on all 3 bikes and it certainly helps.
