Has anyone ridden the Maiden Way in Cumbria, near Garrigill, between the A686 and Bank Hall? I am looking to do a loop over there but dont want to get into something with absolutely no sign of a trail on the ground. I have Google Earthed my intended route but cannot make out any trail along this section. Of course this could just mean it is a very narrow thread of lovely singltrack , perhaps?
No, but IIRC it was OK. Not outstanding, but worth doing. Pretty steep as a descent into the Eden Valley, but difficult/impossible to climb, so it depends on your inclinations which way you do it. Route finding is a little vague through the farm fields at the west end, but then settles down. Weird cairns and obelisks on the top, quite atmospheric; I think some of it may be 'art'. I seem to recall the descent to the east has been resurfaced and is quite obvious, but it's a while since I did it and I could be confusing it with something else.
The western end has old rail tracks rusting away where they used to drop the ore down into the valley on carts - quite interesting.
Cheers all ,but , excuse my ignorance, what is IIRC ? I intend to do a loop in this area of Pennines and it won't be the end of the world if I dont use bridleway known as Maiden Way as there are other legal return options. I just fancied it .
As Monty has put the climb up out of the Eden Valley is impossible and a big push all thew way up. Once on the top there is no wonderfull singletrack I'm afraid, more the remains of an over grown wide Roman Road which drops you down onto a Drovers track which can be seen as a ribbon of yellow on your right as you are heading down the A686 towards Alston. Nothing oputstanding but definitely worth doing for the out in the wilderness type of feeling.
I started at Garrigill up to Greggs hut around Cross Fell dropping down into Kirkland and then climbed back up from the Eden side. The descent is superb!!!!!
